The Misery Report: Phillies blow lead, lose 5-4 to the Pittsburgh Pirates
Another one slips away… The Phillies lost again Friday night, this time a 5-4 walk-off heartbreaker to the Pirates in Pittsburgh. That’s seven losses in their last eight games, and this slump is getting harder to ignore.
They actually led this game 4-2 at one point. Trea Turner was doing his part, putting together a three-hit night with three runs scored and two RBI. He singled and scored in the first, doubled and scored again in the third, then delivered a two-run single in the fourth to give the Phils that 4-2 lead.
And then the wheels came off.
Jesús Luzardo wasn’t on the mound this time, but the bullpen still couldn’t close the door. Bryan Reynolds tied the game with a solo shot in the third and a two-run homer from Henry Davis in the fourth evened things up.
From there, the Pirates’ bullpen flat-out shut the Phillies down. Chase Shugart, Caleb Ferguson, Dennis Santana, and David Bednar combined to allow just two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over the final five innings.
The ninth inning was a mess. Adam Frazier and Jared Triolo led off with singles against Jordan Romano. Isiah Kiner-Falefa dropped down a bunt to load the bases. After a strikeout, Nick Gonzales lifted a 2-2 slider deep enough to left for the sac fly that won it.
Matt Strahm did his job in the eighth, striking out the side but Bednar came right back and struck out the side in the ninth, capping it by getting Turner to chase a curveball in the dirt. Game over.
Phillies – Pirates Game Notes:
That ninth inning meltdown. The Phillies were on the ropes as soon as Frazier and Triolo got aboard.
The Phillies managed just two hits over the final five innings. The bats continue to disappear in the late innings.
Up Next for the Phillies
Ranger Suárez gets the ball Saturday as the Phillies try to stop this skid. He’ll face Pirates lefty Andrew Heaney.
Bottom line: This is now a full-blown slump. Seven losses in eight games, bullpen issues, and an offense that keeps vanishing late. It’s time for this team to find a spark, fast.
