Phillies claim right-handed reliever Ryan Cusick off waivers from the White Sox
The Phillies made a small bullpen move on Sunday, claiming right-handed reliever Ryan Cusick off waivers from the White Sox and optioning him to the Florida Complex League. To open a roster spot, they designated right-hander Kyle Tyler for assignment.

Ryan Cusick hasn’t pitched in the majors and has already bounced between three organizations this season. He was DFA’d by the White Sox just two days after they claimed him. He posted a 6.32 ERA in 14 Triple-A appearances this year with Oakland and Detroit.
Over five minor league seasons, Cusick has a 5.20 ERA with 248 strikeouts in 238.2 innings.
Tyler made 12 starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season with a 4.31 ERA and a 5-3 record. He has some MLB experience, posting a 4.31 ERA across 15 big league appearances with the Angels, Padres, and Marlins.
Swept in Pittsburgh: Phillies dropped fifth straight game, falling 2-1 to the Pirates
Whether Ryan Cusick factors into the Phillies’ plans this season remains to be seen, but I obviously wouldn’t expect him to do, well, pretty much of anything at the major league level.
Sure, the bullpen depth has been an issue and the front office is clearly looking for more options. If Tyler is claimed or traded, the Phillies will find out soon enough whether they made the right call moving on from him.
