According to Jake Fischer (via The Stein Line), the team flew in Tyrese Maxey to meet with VJ Edgecombe during the Baylor freshman’s pre-draft visit.
Trust me, I know this news isn’t that exciting, but it does give us a little bit of insight into where the organization currently stands ahead of the NBA Draft. The Sixers hold the No. 3 overall pick and clearly they are doing some serious homework on VJ Edgecombe, who could very well be on his way in joining Tyrese Maxey in the backcourt.
VJ Edgecombe is a strong candidate to be selected at No. 3 by the Sixers
We’ve heard a ton about Ace Bailey, so who is VJ Edgecombe?
For starters, VJ Edgecombe is a 19-year old, 6’5″ Bahamian-born wrecking ball that took home Big 12 Rookie of the Year and Second-Team All-Big 12 honors his second year at Baylor University. The kid is a walking highlight reel, with big-time dunks, chasedown blocks, and defensive clamps on the perimeter.
VJ Edgecombe plays with a motor that screams “Philadelphia.”
What stands out is his athleticism and physical tools. He gets deflections. He hounds guards. He flies to the rim and plays with real juice. Offensively, he’s not polished yet — the jumper is still developing, and he’s not someone you trust to iso and create off the dribble consistently. But the signs could be there.
VJ Edgecombe shot 34% from deep and 78% from the line, and when he got hot late in the year, he showed flashes of serious scoring upside — 30 points vs. Kansas State, 28 vs. Utah, and 20+ efforts vs. Houston and Arizona.
VJ Edgecombe: 30 PTS, 3 AST vs Kansas St.
My first thought that was between Maxey, Jared McCain, and possibly Quentin Grimes, it’s getting a little crowded in the guard room.
Personally, I don’t really care if that’s the case. You simply do not pass on upside, regardless of the player. Let Nick Nurse and Daryl Morey (god help us) figure out the rotations when training camp begins.
VJ Edgecombe is one of those high-ceiling defenders who could be a perfect long-term pairing next to Maxey. Low-usage, high-effort, versatile guard who defends multiple spots and thrives off-ball. If the jumper comes along, he’s a home run.
Here’s what I don’t get. I see VJ Edgecombe in the same category as Ace Bailey. Between the two in regards to big upside and a ton of uncertainties.
There’s obvious differences but overall, I’m not sure either player is going to provide an immediate impact on a team that (stupidly) still believes they are contenders.
At this point with the Sixers, I’m down for whatever. The whole point of this article was to touch on Maxey’s involvement and why that’s important.
Whether the Sixers are seriously considering Edgecombe or just testing his personality and feel, Maxey’s presence in the meeting means they’re evaluating chemistry, fit, and culture, along with talent. .
The offense will take time, but he’s already an NBA-level defender, and if he grows next to Maxey and McCain, you might have the foundation of a nasty young backcourt.
Don’t be surprised if the Sixers take a big swing on draft night. They clearly had Maxey in the room for a reason.
