Matvei Michkov named to NHL All-Rookie Team after historic debut season with the Flyers
Let the record show: Matvei Michkov is HIM.
The NHL officially announced today that Flyers phenom Matvei Michkov has been named to the 2024–25 All-Rookie Team, and if you’ve been paying even the slightest bit of attention, this should come as absolutely no surprise.
At just 20 years old, Michkov racked up 26 goals and 37 assists for 63 points in 80 games. He led all NHL rookies in goals and even strength production while tying for second in total points.
If that sounds rare, it is.
He’s now one of just eight Flyers rookies in franchise history to hit the 60-point mark, and the first to do it since Mikael Renberg in 1993. His three overtime goals tied him with Sidney Crosby and Rick Nash for the most OT goals by a teenager in NHL history.
Not Flyers history. League history.
Rookie Flyers Legends Club now features Matvei Michkov.
Matvei Michkov becomes the 11th Flyer to be named to the NHL All-Rookie Team, joining names like Ron Hextall, Pelle Lindbergh, Simon Gagne, and Shayne Gostisbehere.
Pretty good company if you’re into that whole franchise cornerstone thing.
Michkov is also the first Flyers rookie in over 30 years to win Rookie of the Month twice in a single season. He took home the honors in both October and February. And the numbers back it up.
Eight power play goals, 17 power play points, and 46 even-strength points, the most among all rookies.
He matched Matt Read’s 2011 season mark for most three-point games by a Flyers rookie and became the first 20-year-old Flyer to crack the 50-point barrier since Simon Gagne in 2001.
Matvei Michkov’s already arrived. Now it’s about leveling up and helping take the Flyers back to relevance. The Flyers haven’t had a rookie with this kind of offensive electricity since Gagne. Maybe not since Lindros. If you’re a Philly fan still trying to shake the rust off from the last decade of frustration, this is your guy.
Also making the NHL All-Rookie Team were Macklin Celebrini (Sharks) and Cutter Gauthier (Ducks), yes the guy Danny Briere shipped out, as forwards, Lane Hutson (Canadiens) and Denton Mateychuk (Blue Jackets) on defense, and Dustin Wolf (Flames) in goal.
All due respect to Celebrini and Cutter, but the crown in this rookie class might already belong to Matvei Michkov.
