Ranger Suárez shoves, Schwarber goes deep as Phillies blank Blue Jays 8-0

Another night, another gem from Ranger Suárez.

The Phillies’ quiet ace shoved seven shutout innings and Kyle Schwarber continued to torch baseballs, launching his 22nd homer of the season as the Phils cruised to an 8-0 win over the Blue Jays on Friday night in South Philly.

Schwarbomb

This was vintage Ranger Suarez

Efficient, poised, and totally in control. He struck out six, walked just one, and scattered five hits over 94 pitches. Since that clunky seven-run season debut, Ranger Suárez has given up just seven runs total across his next seven starts. The dude is locked in. Citizens Bank Park let him hear it as he walked off to a standing ovation in the seventh.

The offense gave him more than enough cushion in the second inning. Brandon Marsh laced an RBI double off the wall, then Schwarber sent a 410-foot missile over Myles Straw’s head in dead center. Three-run bomb, 4-0 lead, and Gausman was left wondering what hit him.

Rookie Otto Kemp, who got the start at first base to slide Alec Bohm back to third, made the most of his moment. He ripped his first career extra-base hit in the second and added an RBI single in the sixth.

Defensively, Trea Turner looked more like a Gold Glover than a guy rehabbing a wrist. He made a ridiculous sliding grab in the third inning that probably saved a run.

This was a win the Phillies needed. They’ve taken three of four and continue to hang tough in the NL East even without Bryce Harper and Aaron Nola. Harper still hasn’t swung a bat or thrown yet with that wrist inflammation, and Nola is on the shelf with a rib issue that’s making it painful just to breathe. But the team keeps grinding.

Next Up: Cristopher Sánchez (5-2, 3.10 ERA) takes the ball Saturday against Toronto’s Bowden Francis (2-8, 6.18 ERA). Let’s keep the good vibes rolling.
