Bryson Stott hyperextended elbow on Monday, back in the lineup tonight vs Fish
The Phillies kept rolling Monday night with a 5-2 win over the Marlins, but it wasn’t all good news. Bryson Stott hyperextended his right elbow on a violent swing late in the game and is expected to sit out Tuesday.
It happened on his second-to-last swing. It was an awkward hack at a low-and-in slider that dropped him to a knee and left him walking in circles trying to shake it off. He stayed in the game, grounded out, and finished the night at second base.
It appears Bryson Stott will play tonight, starting at second base
Edmundo Sosa was expected to get the nod at second against Marlins righty Cal Quantrill, though Sosa’s bat has cooled significantly since his red-hot May (.386 through 5/20, 4-for-38 since).
There’s some added concern here. Bryson Stott dealt with nerve irritation in that same elbow last season (also in Miami) and it lingered for months, sapping his production.
It’s unclear if this is related, but the timing isn’t great. While Stott continues to flash elite glove work, his bat has been ice cold. He’s now slashing just .236/.300/.329 a noticeable drop from his career-best .280/.329/.419 line in 2023.
With the Phillies surging. They are winners of five straight, scoring nearly seven runs per game during that stretch. Bryson Stott’s long-term health looms large, especially with depth options like Sosa struggling at the plate.
Three more winnable games against a Marlins team that can’t hit lefties and three southpaws (Luzardo, Suarez, and Sanchez) lined up perfectly heading into the weekend.
