Phillies trade cash for RHP Nolan Hoffman from the Texas Rangers
The Phillies made a move Tuesday, acquiring right-handed pitcher Nolan Hoffman from the Texas Rangers for cash considerations. He was immediately optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley, which is exactly where a guy with a 5.91 ERA in the minors belongs.

Hoffman, 27, has made 22 appearances (3 starts) for triple-A Round Rock this season and has struck out 46 batters in 35 innings. The strikeout rate is solid — 11.8 K/9 — but when you’re running a near-6 ERA in the minors, that’s not exactly screaming “future big leaguer.”
To be fair, he punched out 77 in 58 innings last year for triple-A Norfolk (Baltimore), so the swing-and-miss stuff is there. But so are the runs. Over the last two seasons: 123 Ks in 93 innings, 3.65 career ERA across 185 minor league games. Decent numbers. Nothing to lose your mind over.
He was a fifth-round pick by the Mariners in 2018 out of Texas A&M and most recently part of the Rangers’ system. Now he’s heading to Coca-Cola Park, where the Phillies will try to polish him up and see if there’s anything useful under the hood.
Depth move, obviously. Nolan Hoffman is just another name on the Lehigh Valley farm.
