Kyle Schwarber goes deep again, Cristopher Sánchez shoves as Phillies take series in Miami
The Phillies just keep rolling. Kyle Schwarber launched his 23rd homer of the season, Cristopher Sánchez was absolutely locked in for eight innings, and the Phillies edged the Marlins 2–1 on Thursday night to take three of four in the series.
Kyle Schwarber came to the plate in the eighth with the game tied, saw a 1–0 sinker from Anthony Bender, and obliterated it 428 feet to right-center. Just a no-doubt missile.
Kyle Schwarber HR No. 23
That bomb puts him at 23 on the season, trailing only Shohei Ohtani (25) in the National League. And it could not have come at a better time.
On the mound, Cristopher Sánchez (6–2) was surgical. Eight innings, five hits, one run, and four strikeouts. He didn’t walk a single batter and lowered his ERA to 2.87.
Cristopher Sanchez: 8 IP, 5 H, R, 4 K
He’s becoming one of the most reliable arms in the rotation, and if he keeps pitching like this, the Phillies are going to have some tough postseason rotation decisions in a good way.
The Marlins actually struck first, with Nick Fortes knocking in Dane Myers in the fifth. But after Miami starter Edward Cabrera exited in the seventh following his best outing of the season, the Marlins bullpen gave it right back. Cade Gibson came in, loaded the bases on a wild pitch and a hit-by-pitch, and allowed a run to tie it up at 1.
Orion Kerkering closed it down in the ninth for his second save of the year, locking up another strong win in what’s been a dominant stretch for Philadelphia.
There was some drama in the ninth, Otto Kemp tried to score from second on a Bryson Stott infield single but was thrown out at the plate. Fortunately, it didn’t end up mattering.
Up next for the Phillies
The Mets lost their sixth game in a row, 7-1 to the Braves. They are now tied with the Phillies at 45-30 atop of the NL East standings with a three game set at Citizens Bank Park this weekend. Zack Wheeler (7–2, 2.76 ERA) is on the mound Friday.
