Astros blank Phillies after Hummel’s late homer, a wasted gem from Ranger Suárez
Even with a Ranger Suarez Masterclass, you could feel it coming. One swing. One run. One of those nights.
Cooper Hummel, a guy who spent most of the year in Triple-A, took Ranger Suárez deep in the eighth inning Tuesday night and that was all she wrote. The Phillies lost 1-0 to the Astros in a frustrating, no-offense heartbreaker in Houston.
Ranger Suarez was locked in all night…
Again. Ranger Suarez shoved for 7 2/3 innings, gave up just four hits, struck out seven, and walked one. His only blemish was Cooper Hummel’s solo shot to right-center off a 1-2 pitch.
The fact that it came from a recent call-up makes it sting a little more, but when your offense does absolutely nothing, that’s all it takes.
Ranger Suárez deserved better.
To his credit, Framber Valdez was dealing. The Phillies only managed four hits off him in seven scoreless innings. Philly had their best shot in the sixth when J.T. Realmuto reached on an error and stole second, but a double play from Edmundo Sosa bailed Houston out.
That’s pretty much the entire Phillies highlight reel…and this play from Bohmer
Bryan Abreu handled the eighth, Josh Hader closed the door in the ninth with two punchouts, and just like that, the Phils dropped Game 1 of the series.
Phillies Game Notes:
- Ranger Suárez became the first Phillies pitcher to record nine quality starts in his first 10 outings since Aaron Harang in 2015. Which is awesome. But again… no run support.
- Phillies are now 0-for-June when scoring fewer than two runs. That’s not a real stat but it might as well be.
Up Next for the Phillies
Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.81 ERA) gets the ball Wednesday night as the Phillies look to even the series. He’ll face Colton Gordon (2-1, 4.54 ERA). Maybe someone on this offense would like to wake up before then.
