Let’s just cut right to the point. The Philadelphia 76ers’ No. 3 overall draft pick VJ Edgecombe announced that he will be wearing jersey No. 77 this season with the Sixers. No. 7 is his favorite number but unfortunately, 39-year old Kyle Lowry currently has that jersey number so he was forced to improvise.

Yikes. I’m not sure I like this from the Sixers. Lucky number 77? Really?
Honestly, it sounds like the unluckiest basketball jersey number ever and trying to sell it as anything but disrespect and a lack of self-awareness from the organization and their roster is just nasty work.
How is VJ Edgecombe, our No. 3 overall draft pick, going to step foot on the court at the Wells Fargo Center Xfinity Mobile Arena wearing No. 77 and be taken seriously?
That’s like a MLB player making it to The Show and continuing to wear their High A number. Can’t happen. Not to mention, what’s Kyle Lowry doing? He’s basically a player-coach at this point and the fifth guard option behind Maxey, McCain, Grimes, and Edgecome.
I know he’s a “legend” but are we still sure he has enough clout to not give up his number to a kid that was just a top 3 draft pick and widely considered as a franchise building block for the future?

Profound for sure, but I wish Kyle Lowry would stop getting in the way of letting the Sixers’ young guys progress and get acclimated in Philly.
I don’t think anyone wants a 39-year old version of Kyle Lowry getting minutes next season on this Sixers team. That would be almost as embarrassing as our top 3 draft pick VJ Edgecombe wearing number 77 his rookie season.
The only saving grace here is that VJ Edgecombe is an absolute dawg. Look no further than this workout video posted online a day after the draft. Maybe 77 will actually play out in Jimmy Butler 2.0’s favor after all.
