Phillies Braves 6-1 Recap

Braves bounce back Schwellenbach’s 12 Ks and Murphy’s slam, beat the Phillies 6-1

Well, so much for riding Friday night’s momentum. The Phillies got steamrolled 6-1 by the Braves on Saturday, thanks to a breakout performance from Spencer Schwellenbach and a seventh-inning grand slam off the bat of Sean Murphy that ended this one with authority.

Schwellenbach carved up the Phillies’ lineup for a career-high 12 strikeouts over seven dominant innings. He allowed just three hits, one walk, and made it look like a rehab assignment with how easy he cruised through a lineup that had just dropped 13 runs the night before.

Meanwhile, Jesús Luzardo did what he could to keep Philly in it. He danced around trouble for five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks. He stranded five and struck out seven, but the offense never gave him a shot.

Alec Bohm got the Phils on the board with an RBI single in the sixth, trimming Atlanta’s lead to 2-1. But that was the closest they’d get. Nick Castellanos flied out to end the threat, and from there it unraveled fast.

Jordan Romano entered in the seventh and immediately ran into trouble. Three straight Braves reached, and Sean Murphy jumped on the first pitch he saw, crushing a 455-foot grand slam deep into the Georgia night. Game over.

It was Murphy’s 10th homer of the year and his second career slam. Also worth noting: Matt Olson quietly extended his on-base streak to a career-high 29 games with a first-inning single.

Up Next for the Phillies:

Sunday’s series finale features Ranger Suárez (6-2, 2.08 ERA) for the Phillies trying to stop the bleeding, while the Braves send Spencer Strider (3-5, 4.07 ERA) to the mound looking for the series win.

Let’s see which version of the Phillies’ offense shows up.
