Flyers await brutal injury news on Tyson Foerster, free agent contingency plans underway

The Flyers’ free agency plans took an unexpected detour on Tuesday. The front office is now left scrambling for answers after learning that one of their most important young players in Tyson Foerster might be on the shelf for the start of the 2025–26 season.

Foerster, who just inked a two-year, $7.5 million extension earlier this summer, is dealing with a serious infection in his elbow stemming from a minor injury suffered during the IIHF World Championships.

Danny Brière said Tyson Foerster flew to Vancouver to see a specialist on Monday, and while the team hasn’t confirmed anything, the early vibe is not good. One source put it bluntly: “We are hoping for the best, although it’s not looking great right now.”

If the infection is as bad as feared, Foerster could miss up to three months, derailing what was supposed to be a continuation of his breakout campaign.

The 24-year-old winger posted 25 goals and 43 points in 81 games last season and built real chemistry on a responsible third line alongside Noah Cates and Bobby Brink—one the Flyers were counting on to provide matchup depth this year.

The Flyers are back in patchwork mode

Brière reportedly tried to add veteran grit by making a push for Corey Perry, but Perry chose the LA Kings on a one-year, $3.5M deal, so the Flyers pivoted to a handful of smaller signings.

Philadelphia Flyers 2025 NHL Free Agency

  • Dan Vladar, G – 2 years, $6.7M (former Flames goalie, expected to compete for the starting role)
  • Christian Dvorak, C – 1 year, $5.4M (former Canadiens and Coyotes center, knows Rick Tocchet well)
  • Noah Juulsen, D – 1 year, $900K (depth defender from Vancouver, another Tocchet connection)
  • Dennis Gilbert, D – 1 year, $875K (formerly with Ottawa, physical, no-nonsense style)
  • Lane Pederson, C – 1 year, two-way deal worth $775K (depth center from Edmonton)

Vladar will fight for crease time and Dvorak could be a nice stopgap in the bottom six. Juulsen and Gilbert bring grit, and Pederson might be a warm body for Lehigh Valley.

Tyson Foerster’s absence changes things. The Flyers already needed help generating offense, and now they’ll be down a proven 25-goal scorer for what could be the first quarter of the season.

Internally, players like Brink, Olle Lycksell, and maybe even Samu Tuomaala will get longer looks in camp.

The Flyers’ Free Agency Golden Goose: Maxim Shabanov.

The 22-year-old Russian winger was supposed to make a decision Tuesday but appears to be holding off as a few new suitors enter the fold. Both New York hockey teams and the pesky Utah Mammoth have reportedly entered the mix.

Shabanov’s contract would be the same across the board, but bonus money might sway the final call. The Flyers are still believed to be the frontrunner. Whether he signs or not, the reality is that this Flyers offseason just took a hit.

Tyson Foerster’s injury is the kind of bad-luck development that can derail early-season momentum. Brière and Tocchet have some work to do—and the solutions might have to come from within.
