“Who Is Caitlin Clark?” — Jeopardy fail goes viral for all the right reasons

Caitlin Clark is officially a household name. And if you needed more proof, look no further than this viral moment from Jeopardy! — the game show that’s about as far from sports culture as you can get.

The Clue That Had Jeopardy Nerds Scrambling

During a recent episode of Jeopardy!, contestants were navigating a category called “Sporty Stuff,” which sounds like something the producers threw in just to spice up their usual opera and ancient Mesopotamia trivia.

One of the clues, worth $800, read:

“This UConn star had an intense spring in 2025, playing on her first national championship team and being picked first in the WNBA Draft.”

Accompanying the clue was a photo of none other than Paige Bueckers. Easy layup, right?

Well… not for one contestant named Rahul.

Before everyone starts roasting Rahul and sending him straight into the Jeopardy nerd hall of shame, let’s look at the bigger picture here.

This man clearly doesn’t watch much basketball, and definitely not the WNBA. He had no idea who was in that photo. But even in the land of trivia, surrounded by history buffs and science majors, the first name that popped into his head was:

Caitlin Clark.

That right there is all the proof you need: Caitlin Clark is the face of the WNBA. And more importantly one of the biggest names in sports right now.

Seriously — name one other WNBA player in history who could be guessed by a non-sports fan on Jeopardy. You can’t.

Not Sue Bird. Not Diana Taurasi. Not Candace Parker. And I say that with respect. All legends — but none of them ever reached this level of mainstream notoriety.

Caitlin Clark isn’t just a star in the league. She’s the name casuals blurt out when they have no idea what’s going on. That’s next-level impact. That’s how you know you’ve broken through.

No disrespect to Paige Bueckers either, she’s a star in the making

Paige Bueckers is great. She just won a national title and went first overall in the WNBA Draft. Her game is incredibly fun to watch, and if you’re a real hoops junkie like me, you’ve been familiar with her since high school. In many ways, Bueckers shares that same young, phenom potential as Caitlin Clark. I’ve got a ton of respect for Paige.

However, when the two matched up in March Madness the season prior, Caitlin sent Paige and UConn packing — in front of the entire world. What made that moment even sweeter? Legendary Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma didn’t recruit Caitlin, and UConn was literally her dream school growing up.

Yet another reminder that Caitlin Clark is the best women’s basketball player on the planet. That’s some Michael Jordan-level stuff right there — shoving it down their throats on the biggest stage in college basketball. It completely shut down any narrative or conversation around Paige being a “threat” to Caitlin.

A scrappy Iowa team lead by Clark took down the biggest juggernaut in Women’s basketball, the UConn Huskies.

Anyways, back to the poor Jeopardy contestant Rahul

To be completely fair to Rahul, if you were going to throw out a random name, there’s no safer bet than the player everyone talks about — from ESPN to TikTok to, apparently, Jeopardy.

So yeah, it was technically the wrong answer… but it might’ve been the most right kind of wrong we’ve ever seen.
