Rumor: Eagles backup RB may be on chopping block during training camp
The Eagles don’t play games when it comes to roster spots. So it’s not all that surprising that A.J. Dillon, once a projected RB2, might already be on the roster bubble heading into training camp.
According to Geoff Mosher of PhillyVoice, Dillon isn’t a lock to make the 53-man squad. That’s a sentence that would’ve sounded crazy a few months ago when the Eagles signed the former Packers bruiser after Kenneth Gainwell left for Pittsburgh. But the emergence of Will Shipley — a 2024 fourth-rounder with real burst and serious hands — has thrown a wrench into the depth chart.
Eagles Could Turn to Shipley Over Dillon as Barkley’s Backup
Shipley reportedly flashed at OTAs and brings a different element to the backfield — speed, explosiveness, and legitimate pass-catching upside. If he can develop in blitz pickup, something Gainwell thrived at, he might leapfrog Dillon on the depth chart. And let’s be honest: that’s the one area Dillon hasn’t offered much in — third-down versatility.
He’s a between-the-tackles grinder, sure. But after a disappointing 3.4 YPC in 2023 and a season-ending neck injury that cost him all of 2024, it’s fair to question what he still brings to the table. Right now, Dillon is playing on a league-minimum deal. That alone tells you how the league views him.
Eagles Depth Behind Barkley Isn’t Deep, But That Doesn’t Guarantee Dillon’s Spot
There’s not much proven depth behind Saquon Barkley, but don’t let that fool you. Keilan Robinson was just claimed for special teams, and UDFAs Montrell Johnson and ShunDerrick Powell are total unknowns. You’d think that would boost Dillon’s chances, but if the coaching staff believes Shipley is the better fit for this offense, Dillon might be on the outside looking in.
Again, this all comes straight from PhillyVoice, and it’s something worth keeping an eye on during training camp. The Eagles don’t keep guys for name recognition — they keep guys who contribute. And right now, Dillon’s got something to prove.
Bottom line? If Will Shipley continues to rise, A.J. Dillon could find himself cut before Week 1. And in Philly, that’s just business.
