JT Realmuto clutches up, Sánchez shines as Phillies escape San Diego with 2-1 win
The Phillies needed a lift after two tough losses in San Diego. Cristopher Sánchez delivered on the mound, and JT Realmuto came through when it mattered most to give the Phillies a gritty 2-1 win on Sunday, avoiding the sweep, heading into the All-Star break with some momentum.
The Pitching Clinic
Cristopher Sánchez continued his dominant season with 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits, striking out six, and walking three.
It was another statement performance from a guy who arguably should be heading to Atlanta as an All-Star. He left to a standing ovation from a solid pocket of Phillies fans behind the dugout.
“This is a Cristopher Sánchez appreciation post. That is all.”
Bryce Harper’s Hustle Sets the Tone
Bryce Harper scored both of the Phillies’ runs and manufactured the first one with aggressive base running and a little help from the Padres’ defense. After a two-out walk in the first, Harper took second on a throwing error by Manny Machado and came around to score when Luis Arraez fired one away at first base. Ugly sequence for San Diego, but heads-up play by Harper.
JT Realmuto’s Go-Ahead Blow
Tied 1-1 in the eighth, Harper lashed a grounder past third base against All-Star lefty Adrian Morejon. That set up JT Realmuto, who smoked a double into the left-center gap to bring Harper home for the go-ahead run. David Morgan, who had just entered the game, could only scream into his glove.
Strahm Slams the Door
In the ninth, Matt Strahm issued an intentional walk to Fernando Tatis Jr. with one out, putting two on and the winning run at first. But he got Luis Arraez to line out to left to lock up his sixth save and seal the win.
Series Notes
The Phillies and Padres split the six-game season series, each going 2-1 at home. The Phillies are now 58-39 heading into the All-Star break.
Next Up
After the break, the Phillies return home Friday to host the Angels. The Padres hit the road for a series in Washington.
