AJ Brown has a new nickname for Cooper DeJean at Eagles’ training camp
AJ Brown revealed a new nickname for Cooper DeJean during Eagles training camp this week, calling the second-year defensive back “APC.”
If you’re into acronyms, APC means All-Pro Coop, which is obviously an option for a guy who wrapped up his rookie season with a pick-six off Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX. Brown knows the talent is there and is clearly trying to speak it into existence.
Is “All-Pro Coop” really a nickname though?
Don’t get me wrong, I agree with the sentiment and I like any and all interactions between our secondary and elite wide receivers but as a fair and balanced journalist, it doesn’t really seem like much of a nickname unless you’re strictly calling Cooper DeJean APC.
Maybe we can roll with APC as an internal training camp nickname for Cooper DeJean because I don’t think it’s going to change much. You can already lock-in The Linc echoing “COOOOOOOOP” every time DeJean makes a play this season.
Plus, AJ Brown already asked Eagles’ fans to get behind a new chant for him this season. How much are we going to be tasked with? I’m going to need a notepad at The Linc just to remember my marching orders before a Birds game and that won’t work when I’m double fisting a few cold ones while waiting to enter the gates.
AJ Brown wants fans to hit him with a chant every time he makes a big play this season
APC will work for training camp and motivation for Cooper DeJean but outside of that, it’s always going to be Coop. It doesn’t hit the same, ya know? I really don’t give a shit either way. As long as Cooper DeJean likes it and AJ Brown is pushing for it, count me in.
Cooper DeJean is using the new nickname as motivation. Nice.
“I thought he was crazy,” DeJean said on Thursday. “But when he explained it to me, he’s trying to speak it into existence for me. That gives me something to work towards and prove every single day.”
AJ Brown is ready to put a stamp on his legacy this saeason
If anyone can hand out nicknames, there’s really no one better than AJ Brown, the guy who’s been named second-team All-Pro three years running and already has over 4,000 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns since landing in Philly.
Point being, the guy knows what elite looks like and if he’s telling you he’s going to “make you All-Pro” you better start sharpening your iron because you’re going to be tested daily.
This is what leaders do.
Brown sees something special in DeJean, just like we all saw last year when the rookie stepped into the starting nickel role midseason and helped transform Vic Fangio’s defense into the league’s best. If you can ball out like that as a rookie, you’ve earned a mentor like AJ Brown calling you out (in the best way possible).
DeJean’s versatility might be the scariest part. He’s no longer just the nickel corner. He’s lining up as a safety in base packages, shifting into nickel when needed, and learning the finer details of multiple roles. By the time the season starts, he’s going to be everywhere.
All-Pro might sound lofty for Year 2, but DeJean is already playing like a guy who thrives on lofty expectations and if AJ Brown has his way, APC is going to be more than just a nickname, it’s going to be a reality.
