The Arizona Diamondbacks just watched their biggest trade chip take a 96-mph fastball to the hand and the timing couldn’t be worse. Eugenio Suarez, who leads the league in RBIs and has already mashed 36 home runs this season, was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of Monday’s 5-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
The fastball from reliever Will Vest nailed Suarez on the right hand, and he immediately left the game in visible pain. Blaze Alexander pinch-ran in his place.

Eugenio Suarez was sent for X-rays after the game. While Dbacks manager Torey Lovullo called him “day-to-day,” he admitted Suarez’s hand and finger were “tender to the touch.” Which… doesn’t exactly inspire confidence six days before the trade deadline.
This is brutal timing for both the Diamondbacks and a handful of playoff contenders who were reportedly circling Suarez. The 34-year-old, a two-time All-Star, has been having one of the best seasons of his career and was arguably the top power bat on the market.
He already had suitors lining up, including our Philadelphia Phillies but now everything is in limbo while we await the results of the x-rays.
Arizona, sitting at 51-56 and clearly leaning toward selling after already trading a big bat earlier this month, might’ve just watched its top trade chip suffer a deadline-derailing injury.
If Eugenio Suarez is sidelined for even a short stint, it could blow up the plans of several contenders looking to add thump and force the Dbacks to either sell low or hold tight. X-rays and follow-ups over the next 24–48 hours will be critical. For now, the entire MLB trade market just hit pause.
