Phillies finalize trade for Jhoan Duran in exchange for 2 top prospects
Sleepy Dave Dombrowski has finally awoken from his slumber.
For the first time in what feels like forever, the Phillies are dead center in a summer blockbuster and this one is nasty. According to multiple MLB insiders, including Jon Heyman and Mark Feinsand, the Phillies have finalized a deal to acquire Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins.
Duran, the 6-foot-5 right-hander who throws 103 with ease, has a 2.01 ERA, and has racked up 16 saves in 49.1 innings this season.
Ken Rosenthal just dropped this bomb on the timeline:
Jeff Passan followed up with this:
Say hello to the biggest splash of the deadline.
Two top prospects? Don’t care.
Early buzz is that a top-tier prospect like Mick Abel or Aidan Miller could be part of the return. It’s a heavy price, no doubt. If the Phillies are trying to win a World Series right now and they are, then this is the kind of move that takes you there.
Jayson Stark came over the top rope with the haul:
Hearing the Twins will be getting Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait from the Phillies in this deal if finalized

Duran isn’t some mid-tier rental or ‘let’s-see-if-he-bounces-back’ project. This dude is 6-foot-5, throws 103 on command, has a 2.01 ERA, 16 saves, and is under team control through 2027. He checks literally every box for a Phils bullpen that’s been duct-taped together since Memorial Day.

Duran’s fastball is the second-fastest in all of baseball. It’s basically a guided missile with stitches. Now comes the price tag. He has two more years of team control after this season, which makes him more than just a rental. He’s a long-term weapon.
The bullpen has been in survival mode for weeks now, and Duran instantly gives them the kind of late-inning firepower they’ve been sorely lacking. He’s the kind of arm you don’t just dream about in October. It’s the arm you need in October.
The Phillies haven’t pulled off a deadline move this big since… honestly? Maybe ever.
