Daryl Morey walks back saying the Lakers won a Mickey Mouse Trophy in the bubble, continues to talk about everything but the Philadelphia 76ers
While the rest of the NBA is talking about trades, extensions, and actual on-court movement, Daryl Morey, President of Basketball Operations for your perpetually unserious Philadelphia 76ers, decided to fire shots at the Lakers’ 2020 bubble title, only to immediately walk them back shortly after.
Daryl Morey talking about things that happened 5 years ago
Let’s Recap:
Daryl Morey told Joe Vardon of The Athletic that the Lakers’ championship “doesn’t truly hold up as a genuine title,” and that “everyone around the league privately agrees.”
Obviously, Morey was just pissed that his Houston Rockets were actually good that year, only to be derailed by COVID-19 and having to play in the bubble, which ultimately coined the terms Mickey Mouse Trophy and LeDisney.
I can get behind that but the question remains why Morey is even talking about something from his old job in the first place. Why he cares about something that happened five years ago or feels the need to comment on it when he should be focused only on the Philadelphia 76ers is beyond me.
Morey is like a guy who never got over his ex-girlfriend even though he’s now married to someone else. Can we please shift focus back to the Philadelphia 76ers?
Naturally, Lakers fans weren’t too happy with the comments. Honestly, I highly doubt anyone from the Sixers were happy about them either. Then, in predictable fashion, Morey scrambled to play cleanup with Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints, saying he’s actually the guy defending the title all the time and that he’s “frustrated.”
Obviously, the damage has been done and no one in their right minds would believe that Daryl Morey is out there “defending the title all the time” because if he was actually doing that, then he probably belongs in an insane asylum.
If he is doing that because he’s “frustrated” over what happened five years ago then I don’t know what he’s even doing in Philadelphia.
Frustrated? Daryl, brother, we’re frustrated.
Not because of what happened five years ago with the Lakers winning a Mickey Mouse Trophy in the bubble and definitely not because the Houston Rockets did not win a Mickey Mouse Trophy in the bubble.
We’re frustrated because the Philadelphia 76ers haven’t won an NBA title since before the most of us have even been alive. We’re mad at the lack of transparency and updates surrounding Joel Embiid and the overall roster construction that until this very day, hasn’t been good enough to advance past the second round of the playoffs.
Ohhhh Daryl Morey is frustrated? Cmon, man. lol.
That doesn’t even begin to describe what we have been through with the 76ers over the past decade.
Out there debating whether or not a pandemic title has an asterisk while Joel Embiid is talking to ESPN and still has no idea when he will return to a basketball court. Out there talking about the Rockets and Lakers while Paul George just had offseason surgery (again) and Quentin Grimes is still testing the market.
Give me a break.
Daryl Morey has been here for the past what… three or four years and the only thing he has to show for it is complete failure? Maybe don’t toss grenades at teams that actually closed the deal. And sure, the bubble was weird. No one took it seriously. There was fake crowd noise, no travel, and Disney cafeteria food.
The Lakers won it. It’s was nonsense. Fine. Whatever.
I would have loved a Mickey Mouse Trophy though. Joel Embiid alongside Ben Simmons, hoisting the Larry O would have done wonders for my faith in the Sixers and honestly, overall mental health. I would give everything for a competent basketball team here in Philly.
Daryl Morey needs to stop living in 2020 Houston and start acting like a guy trying to win a title in 2025 Philadelphia.
We’re rolling into August, coming off the most depressing Sixers season in a decade, and instead of making real roster moves, we’re dealing with offseason deflections and Mickey Mouse metaphors.
It’s time to put the asterisks away and build a contender. While you’re at it, Daryl Morey, maybe pick up the phone about Quentin Grimes and give us a real update on Joel Embiid.
