Tyrese Maxey’s shocking growth spurt is the next development in his ever-evolving game
It’s very rare to have anything Sixers-related be deemed as good news these days. From the vague and hopeless injury updates about Joel Embiid, to the never-ending injury saga of Paul George, the list goes on and on. One shining light however, continues to be Tyrese Maxey.
Maxey fell into the 76ers lap back in the 2020 NBA Draft. He was the polar opposite of every single draft pick Philly made in the last decade and also unlike previous draft picks, he did nothing but improve since the second he was selected.
Maxey is hardly ever on an injury report and despite the circus he has been surrounded with, he continues to be the bright spot of the team and franchise.
The fitting start to Tyrese Maxey’s Sixers tenure
Of course, everyone’s least favorite head coach, Doc Rivers, had the poor kid riding the bench his rookie season. Maxey had to scrap and claw for any minutes or consistency in playing time.
Things changed quickly once the idea of Ben Simmons fell apart.
Tyrese Maxey finally got his opportunity and all things considered, he took the torch and ran with it. The result was a young explosive guard who quickly erased any doubts about his jumper and ball handling.

Every season since he was drafted, we’ve seen vast improvement from Tyrese Maxey. Even last year while the Sixers imploded, he posted a career year, averaging 26.3 points per game as the leader of the offense.
That posed the question on how much more could we actually see from Tyrese Maxey that we haven’t witnessed already. Well, if any of the latest reports about him are close to being true, then we can officially pencil in a growth spurt as something to watch ahead of the 2025 NBA season.
Perhaps a growth spurt?

It sure seems like he got taller right? I wouldn’t rule it out honestly. Some people are late bloomers, I guess.
Coming from personal experience, I have been told that my grandfather had a second growth spurt around the age of 21 so this actually checks out for Tyrese Maxey in the Conrad house.
Now, what does this actually mean?
It might not mean much, but on a team with a plethora of young guards, these could really distinct Maxey’s game and fit on this team. It gives him more optionality and the team for that matter. It may improve his defense, which in a way has become a slightly underrated aspect of his game.
While speed and acceleration will always be a big part of his game, it will be interesting to see how this impacts it.
And before you call me crazy, Tyrese himself confirmed this growth spurt.

So, while the Sixers are entirely in the back of us Philly fans minds, as we get closer to the 2025 NBA season tipping-off, it will truly be intriguing to see everything plays out.
Will Joel Embiid be ready? Will Paul George… be ready? What is Nick Nurse’s plan for all these guards? At the very least this season should be much more intriguing compared to the disaster that was last season.
