Phillies Orioles Ranger Suarez 5-1 Getaway Day

Phillies bats disappear, Ranger struggles, Orioles avoid sweep with 5-1 Getaway Game win in South Philly

After two straight nights of pounding the baseball like a drumline, the Phillies showed up Wednesday afternoon with all the juice of a soggy paper towel.

Baltimore rookie Coby Mayo cracked a three-run shot, and another call-up, Jeremiah Jackson, added an RBI double in a 5-1 Orioles win that prevented the sweep and sent Ranger Suárez to his fifth loss of the year.

The Phillies did have their chances, racking up eight hits, a leadoff triple from Trea Turner, and the meat of the order up in some key spots, but couldn’t buy a big hit.

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber looked allergic to baseballs with runners on base, and by the time the sixth inning rolled around, it felt like we were all just waiting to board our flight to Texas.

Coby Mayo and Jeremiah Jackson: Welcome to the Show

It’s one thing to get beat by Adley Rutschman or Gunnar Henderson but when two rookies barely a month removed from minor league ball are driving in four of five runs, it certainly hits different.

Jackson doubled in a run for his first big-league RBI, then Mayo turned around the very next pitch and sent it 420 feet into the Baltimore skyline. It was Mayo’s fourth home run since being called up and the kind of swing that made Suárez immediately glance toward the bullpen.

The Phils’ lefty wasn’t terrible, but he sure wasn’t sharp, either. Suarez allowed seven hits and five earned before walking off the mound with nothing more than a whole lot of frustration.

Trea Turner Returns to Form

Trea Turner did his job. He tripled, doubled, singled, drove in the lone run, and even got stranded twice like a dog at the vet. In the fifth, he knocked in Marchán, but the Phillies stranded two with Schwarber and Harper flailing away behind him. In the seventh, Enns came in and casually struck out Schwarber, Harper, and Castellanos in order. Brutal.

If this game had a theme, it was wasted opportunity.

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, the Phillies took the series and will now rest up Thursday before heading to Texas for three with the Rangers.

Cristopher Sánchez (10-3, 2.40 ERA) gets the ball Friday, and he’s been nails lately.

I’m not sure if Sanchez can save the Phillies from Arlington, however. Lifetime, the Fightins are 2-12 on the road against the Rangers. All things considered, it feels like we’re in for a lousy weekend of baseball.

Enjoy the day off tomorrow.
