Ranger Suarez NL Pitcher of the Week

Phillies bats go silent, snap 4-game winning streak in 6-1 loss to the Reds

The Phillies finally cooled off last night because Cincinnati Reds pitcher Brady Singer was nearly untouchable, working six shutout innings while allowing just three of the’ four hits on the night.

The Reds beat the Phillies 6-1 on Tuesday night. Singer struck out six, walked nobody, and faced the minimum through 5 2/3 innings. The only early blemish was a Nick Castellanos infield single, which got wiped away moments later by a double play.

Spencer Steer did most of the damage for Cincinnati, ripping a two-run double in the third and later adding a sac fly. Miguel Andújar launched a solo homer in the fourth, his second since being dealt to the Reds on July 31. José Trevino put the game away in the sixth with a two-run single before rain delayed the game for nearly a half-hour.

Bryce Harper kept the Phillies from being blanked, muscling a two-out homer in the ninth during a downpour, his 18th of the season.

The Ranger Suarez Problem

Ranger Suárez (8–6) took the loss, surrendering a season-high 10 hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two, but never looked fully in control.

The velocity is down and we’re back in the same situation that we’re always in with Ranger Suarez. Second half of the season and he starts to stumble.

Topper and the Phillies will have to get creative and do have options, since Aaron Nola is expected back next week. We’ll see how it goes.

Thanks to the NLDS schedule, the Phillies rotation for Red October just got a whole lot easier

Anyways, the biggest missed chance for the Phillies came in the sixth, when Rafael Marchán singled and Trea Turner doubled to put runners on second and third with two outs. Kyle Schwarber grounded out to end the inning.

What’s Next

The series continues Wednesday with Cristopher Sánchez (11–3, 2.36) facing Hunter Greene (4–3, 2.72) as the Phillies try to bounce back and avoid losing two straight for the first time since late July.
