Cristopher Sánchez proves yet again he’s an ace making a legitimate NL Cy Young push
Cristopher Sánchez isn’t just filling in for Zack Wheeler right now, he’s pitching like one of the best arms in baseball.
With Wheeler sidelined by a blood clot, Sánchez stepped on the mound Tuesday night against Seattle and tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts. He didn’t even get the win thanks to a bullpen letdown, but he was flat-out dominant.
Cristopher Sánchez gets a standing ovation
Cristopher Sanchez By The Numbers…
Sánchez threw first-pitch strikes to 26 of 27 batters. That’s 96.3%, the highest percentage by any Phillies pitcher since tracking started in 2000. Cliff Lee held the old mark at 94.1%.
Think about that. Sánchez just out-Cliff Lee’d Cliff Lee.
“The most important pitcher down the stretch…”
The Résumé Is Stacking Up
Since June 1, Sánchez owns a 1.94 ERA, the best in baseball. Paul Skenes is second at 2.17. He’s also third in the NL in ERA overall (2.46), fifth in strikeouts (169), and second in innings pitched (157).
This isn’t a flash in the pan. After years of wildness, Sánchez started putting it together in 2023, broke out as an All-Star in 2024, and now looks like a full-blown ace. J.T. Realmuto isn’t surprised:
“He’s had that type of stuff and he’s been doing it for years now…there are a lot of teams Sanchy would be the ace on.”
From Luxury to Necessity
The Phillies have been spoiled having Wheeler locked in as the staff anchor, but with him down, Sánchez is now the guy. He’s got the numbers, the poise, and the confidence of his teammates. If Wheeler doesn’t make it back, Sánchez is lined up to start Game 1 in October, something no one would’ve predicted a year ago.
The Phillies still trust Ranger Suárez and Aaron Nola to carry their weight, but right now, everything starts with Sánchez. He’s not just filling in. He’s building a Cy Young case.
