Eagles waive quarterback after Sam Howell trade

The Eagles did some quarterback shuffling on Sunday. Philadelphia first swung a deal with Minnesota for backup Sam Howell, a move directly tied to the news that Tanner McKee fractured his thumb.

McKee isn’t expected to hit injured reserve, but he will miss some time, so the Birds added Howell to stabilize the depth chart behind Jalen Hurts.

In a corresponding move the Birds waived Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who had slid to fourth on the depth chart following Howell’s arrival.

Eagles waived QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

Thompson-Robinson appeared in two of Philly’s three preseason games, completing 10 of 16 passes for 73 yards and one interception.

The 24-year-old spent the past two seasons with Cleveland, where he played in 15 games before landing in Philadelphia this offseason.

As it stands, the Eagles’ quarterback room looks like this:

  • Jalen Hurts (starter)
  • Sam Howell (backup)
  • Tanner McKee (injured, but expected back soon)
  • Kyle McCord (rookie project)

McCord was the only QB to take snaps in Friday’s preseason finale vs. the Jets, going 15-for-35 for 136 yards and a pick. The Eagles, along with the rest of the NFL, will finalize their 53-man roster on Tuesday, which will lock in the depth chart heading into Week 1.
