Phillies smacked around by Mets, Cristopher Sánchez tagged for season-high 6 runs in 13-3 Loss
That one was gross. The Phillies came into Citi Field up seven games in the NL East, and the Mets shaved one off with a 13-3 pounding on Monday night.
Cristopher Sánchez, who’s been nails all season, finally cracked. He gave up a season-high six runs and eight hits in just 5 1/3 innings, his shortest outing since May. Meanwhile, the Mets went 11-for-19 with runners in scoring position.
Luis Torrens? Really?
The Mets’ unlikely hero was Luis Torrens. Yes, that Luis Torrens. The career backup catcher matched his career high with five RBIs, hitting a three-run shot, adding an RBI double, and tacking on a single just to rub it in. He last did that in 2021 for Seattle.
Mark Vientos also turned into Babe Ruth for a night, ripping two RBI doubles, and Jeff McNeil chipped in with three RBIs of his own. Basically, everyone in a Mets uniform was smacking the ball around, and it was a nightmare from the fourth inning on.
Phillies Started Strong, Then Fell Off a Cliff
Trea Turner kicked things off with a leadoff triple and scored on a Kyle Schwarber groundout. Alec Bohm gave the Phils a 3-0 cushion with a two-run single in the third. At that point, it looked like another comfortable night for a team that just swept Seattle.
Instead? Chaos.
After Bohm grounded into a double play in the fifth, he actually stopped the game for about 20 minutes complaining about a parabolic microphone in center field.
Only in a Phillies-Mets game would there be a microphone delay.
The Mets bullpen held things down after Kodai Senga gave them four shaky innings, and from there, the Phillies just got run out of the building.
What’s Next
The Phillies turn to Jesús Luzardo (12-5, 4.10 ERA) on Tuesday night, while the Mets send Sean Manaea (1-2, 5.15 ERA). The Phils still hold a six-game cushion in the NL East, but the Mets have seven head-to-head matchups left. This thing could get dicey if they don’t clean it up quick.
