Flyers and Kraken swap prospects, reunite old junior teammates in the process

The Flyers made a minor move on Thursday, flipping Jon-Randall Avon to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for center Tucker Robertson. On the surface, it’s a classic low-risk prospect swap, but there’s a little extra wrinkle here because these two actually used to be teammates.

Robertson and Avon played together with the Peterborough Petes in the OHL, even winning a title in 2023 before each made the jump to the pro game. Now, a couple years later, they’re switching sweaters in a deal that feels like both organizations just wanted to shuffle the deck a little.

Who the Flyers Got: Tucker Robertson

Robertson, 22, was a fourth-round pick by Seattle back in 2022. He’s 5’11”, 188 pounds, and spent last season with Coachella Valley in the AHL, where he put up nine points (four goals, five assists) in 38 games. Across two pro seasons, he’s sitting at 19 points in 77 games. Nothing flashy, but he’s still young and fits the Flyers’ vision of stockpiling centers who can skate and play a two-way game.

Who They Gave Up: Jon-Randall Avon

Avon was an undrafted signee by the Flyers in 2021, and while he’s shown flashes of skill, he’s been more of a “trying to find his role” type in Lehigh Valley. Last season he notched 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 60 games, and got a reputation as a shootout specialist. The tools are there, but the consistency hasn’t been. Brent Flahr said it best last year: he’s got some assets, but he still has to round out his game if he wants to stick.

Nothing To Write Home About…For Now

These aren’t needle-moving names right now, but this is what rebuilding teams do. The Flyers have to churn the bottom half of the prospect pool and see if someone clicks. Maybe Robertson becomes a reliable depth center with some offensive touch. For the Kraken, maybe Avon finds the niche he couldn’t carve out in Philly.

At the very least, it’s a cool full-circle story. Two guys who lifted a junior trophy together now get fresh starts, just on opposite ends of the trade.
