Aaron Nola Even Year Phillies

Brewers take down Aaron Nola, Phillies, clinch season series and tiebreaker with 6-3 win on Wednesday

The Phillies walked into Milwaukee with a chance to cut into the Brewers’ lead for the best record in the National League. Instead, they walked out down a game in the series and on the wrong side of a season tiebreaker.

Aaron Nola couldn’t escape the first inning without damage, and it snowballed from there. The Brewers tagged him for five runs right out of the gate, capped by Isaac Collins launching a three-run shot to right. Add in a Harrison Bader throwing error and a couple of Brewers knocks, and it was 5-0 before fans even found their seats.

Jose Quintana did his job for Milwaukee, grinding into the seventh while holding the Phillies to three runs on seven hits. His night ended on a Weston Wilson two-run blast that pulled Philly back to within 6-3, but that’s as close as they’d get.

Weston Wilson 2-Run HR

The Phils had their shot right after Wilson’s homer. Runners on the corners, two outs, and JT Realmuto at the plate with a chance to flip the game. Instead, Aaron Ashby came out of the bullpen and fanned him to kill the rally.

Brewers take season series and tiebreaker from Phillies

Milwaukee swept the Phillies in Philly earlier this year, and now with this win, they’ve clinched the season series. Translation: if these two finish with the same record, the Brewers own the tiebreaker for seeding. That could mean the difference between a bye and a Wild Card series.

Philadelphia sits at 80-59, still up 5.5 games in the East thanks to the Mets losing in Detroit. The Brewers, meanwhile, stretched their division lead to six over the Cubs.

Ranger Suárez gets the ball Thursday against Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta. Another chance to prove Philly can hang with the top dogs in the NL.
