Nick Kurtz hits 447-foot tank then strikes out innings later on a 32 MPH pitch from Phillies legend Scott Kingery
One second Nick Kurtz is crushing a 447-foot nuke off a 95.9 mph heater, and the next he’s striking out on a 32 mph courtesy of Phillies’ legend Scott Kingery.
That’s exactly what happened in the Athletics’ 17-4 demolition of the Angels on Saturday. Early in the game, Kurtz launched his first career bomb into orbit, turning around a fastball and putting it halfway to Disneyland. Pure violence off the bat.
Nick Kurtz 447-foot home run
Phillies legend Scott Kingery
Fast forward to garbage time in the 8th, and the Angels decided they’d had enough. Out came former Philadelphia Phillies LEGEND and current Angels infielder Scott Kingery. Kingery made Kurtz look like a fool, striking him out with a combination of 32.5 mph fastballs.
The haters will call it batting practice but worse because BP coaches could throw it harder. I view this as another page in the Legend of Scott Kingery.
JETPAX SZN: Scott Kingery makes Nick Kurtz look foolish
Kingery has barely sniffed the majors this season. In 26 at-bats, he has just four hits, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Obviously, he was sent to the mound to eat up some garbage innings yet, Kurtz couldn’t touch him.
Three pitches, all floating in like a slow-pitch softball, and the rookie whiffed right through the last one for a strikeout that will live on the internet forever.
You could argue Kurtz went from looking like Aaron Judge to looking like he was taking hacks at a church picnic in the span of a few innings but hey, that’s baseball.
Sometimes you blast the ball 447 feet, and sometimes a position player makes you look like you’ve never held a bat before.
