Trea Turner Alec Bohm Injured List Phillies

Phillies lose both Trea Turner and Alec Bohm to the IL, remain hopeful both will return before postseason

September baseball is supposed to be about tuning up for October, not watching your infield collapse like a folding chair at a South Philly cookout. The Phillies announced Monday that both Trea Turner and Alec Bohm are heading to the injured list.

Trea Turner goes on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Marlins. The team is keeping the MRI details close to the vest, but Jon Heyman reports the Phillies are “optimistic” Turner will be back in time for the playoffs, if not a little sooner.

Topper on Trea Turner: “Actually, it was better than what we expected.”

That’s fine and all, but hamstrings are tricky, and you don’t just walk that off with a week of rest. Losing Turner’s bat and speed this late in the year is a massive blow.

As if that wasn’t enough, Alec Bohm also landed on the IL with a cyst in his shoulder that requires an injection. He’ll be shut down for at least a week and a half, with his earliest return date set for September 19.

Bohm had started the last five games and showed no obvious signs of injury, so this one feels like it came out of nowhere. Otto Kemp has been recalled from Lehigh Valley and will start at third base against the Mets.

The Phillies are move both Trea Turner and Alec Bohm to the injured list.

That leaves the Phillies with a brand-new left side of the infield for Monday night vs New York. Edmundo Sosa at shortstop and Kemp at third. Not exactly the script you’d want heading into the final three weeks of the season, but that’s baseball.

The Phillies still hold a comfortable lead in the NL East and remain in position for a first-round bye, but the timing here is brutal.

Turner and Bohm are two core pieces of the lineup, and their absences will test the depth Dave Dombrowski’s built. September just got a lot more stressful.
