Edmundo Sosa Phillies Royals Groin Injury

Phillies add another injury scare with Edmundo Sosa exiting last night’s win over the Royals with groin tightness

The Phillies beat the Royals 8–2 on Friday night, thanks to Walker Buehler’s solid debut and big swings from Bryce Harper and Bryson Stott, but win didn’t come without yet another injury scare.

Edmundo Sosa is day-to-day with groin tightness

Edmundo Sosa, who’s been one of the Phillies’ most reliable utility guys this year, left the game in the seventh inning with what manager Rob Thomson later called right groin tightness. He’s officially day-to-day.

Topper explained postgame:

“I just saw him favor it a little bit while he was on defense.”

Sosa had been hobbling most of the night, but it became obvious something was wrong when he couldn’t get to a ground ball up the middle in the seventh.

He was pulled for Weston Wilson, while Stott slid over to shortstop and promptly mashed a homer in the bottom half of the inning.

Injury pileup

The timing couldn’t be worse. The Phillies already placed Alec Bohm (shoulder cyst) and Trea Turner (hamstring) on the IL earlier this week.

Bohm could be back when the 10 days are up, while Turner is expected back before October. Now Sosa, who’s been slashing .270 with a .725 OPS in his do-everything role, is the latest to join the walking wounded.

If he’s not ready for Saturday, Bryson Stott will likely start at short with Wilson or Donovan Walton filling in up the middle.

Sosa’s injury doesn’t sound major, but the Phillies don’t exactly need more question marks on the infield when October is right around the corner.

For now, it’s precautionary, but with Bohm and Turner already sidelined, every tweak feels like much more serious that it probably is.
