Chris Fowler sounded like he was fighting for his life on the Monday Night Football broadcast, Brent Musburger would have been the perfect reliever

That Monday night Raiders/Chargers game was already a dud, but Chris Fowler’s voice turned it into something even worse. Khalil Mack’s arm bending in the wrong direction was disgusting, Quentin Johnston suddenly catching passes was surprising, and the Chargers looked fine overall.

Honestly, all anyone could focus on was Tom Brady sitting in the booth with a headset on and Fowler sounding like he’d been chain-smoking for a week straight.

That barely even sounds like Chris Fowler…?!

When the camera finally cut to him, I couldn’t believe that voice was coming out of his mouth. He’s been grinding nonstop between the U.S. Open, Georgia-Tennessee, and now Monday Night Football. The man was clearly running on fumes, and ESPN tossed him into the fire anyway.

The solution was obvious. Brent Musburger. He spent years as the Raiders’ play-by-play voice and is still sharp enough to handle a game like this. They could have tapped him in like a bullpen closer and let Fowler sit down before he coughed up a lung.

Instead, Fowler had to gut it out for four quarters of bad AFC West football while we all suffered through it.

Sports already use emergency backups. The NFL has quarterbacks, hockey has goalies.

Why can’t broadcasting have the same setup?

Keep Gus Johnson around for crazy finishes, Kevin Harlan or Ian Eagle for chaos, and Musburger on call for anything involving the Raiders. There should be someone ready to grab a headset when the starter is clearly cooked.

I like Fowler, and he’s excellent on college football, but last night was rough. He was fighting for his life in the booth, and ESPN just left him out there with no help.

Raiders/Chargers didn’t need much to feel watchable, but an emergency Musburger call-in would have saved it.
