Trea Turner Battling Title Phillies

Trea Turner wins first Phillies batting title since 1958 as Red October officially begins

The Phillies closed out the 2025 regular season with a walk-off 2–1 win over the Twins, but the story of the day was Trea Turner, back in the lineup, healthy, and officially crowned the first Phillies batting champ since Richie Ashburn in 1958.

Trea Turner went 0-for-2 in his first game action since straining his hamstring on September 7, exiting after five innings as planned. Didn’t matter.

His .304 average held up, good enough for the National League crown. Only player in the NL to hit .300 this year. That’s survival in an era where every pitcher throws 100 with six pitches.

Trea Turner Battling Title

“Everyone throws 100. Everyone has six pitches. Nobody knows where the ball is going,” Turner said. “It makes sense why it’s hard to hit .300.”

Trea Turner 2025 Season: .304 / .812 OPS, 31 doubles, 7 triples, 15 HR, 36 SB, 94 runs, 69 RBI, 6.7 WAR.

That’s the kind of season you build October around and that’s exactly what happens next. Turner will be leading off and playing shortstop in Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park against either the Dodgers or Reds.

Cristopher Sánchez Gets His Ovation

Cristopher Sánchez capped his Cy Young–caliber season with 5 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out eight before Rob Thomson pulled him to a standing ovation. The numbers are absurd: 13–5, 2.50 ERA, 212 strikeouts across 202 innings. He’ll take the ball Saturday in Game 1 of the NLDS.

Walk-Off Castellanos, Again

Nick Castellanos delivered a sac fly in the 10th for the win, his fifth walk-off plate appearance in the past two seasons, tied for the most in baseball.

Phillies Notes

  • Kyle Schwarber: Finished with 56 HR and 132 RBI, second-most homers in franchise history behind Ryan Howard’s 58. Played all 162 games. MVP finalist incoming.
  • Max Kepler: Snapped out of a September slump with a game-tying bomb in the 8th.
  • Orion Kerkering: Struck out the side in the 10th to get the win. Massive confidence booster heading into October after a rocky September.
  • Garrett Stubbs: Got a standing ovation in his first plate appearance of the season. Legend status confirmed.

Welcome to Red October

The Phillies are rolling into Red October with Turner healthy, Sánchez lined up for Game 1, and Schwarber chasing franchise immortality. The Fightins are hot, the vibes are back, and Citizens Bank Park is about to turn into hell on earth for whoever shows up this weekend.
