Phillies sell more than 27,000 tickets for Wednesday’s intrasquad game at Citizens Bank Park
Only in Philadelphia can you sell 27,000 tickets for an intrasquad game.
We’re talkin’ bout practice. Not a postseason game and hell, not even a regular season game… practice.
The Phillies announced that more than 27,000 fans have already bought $10 tickets for Wednesday night’s scrimmage at Citizens Bank Park, with all proceeds going to Phillies Charities. The cap is set around 31,000, which means the Phils are about to pack half the ballpark for a glorified tune-up.
John Weber, the team’s senior VP of ticket ops, said the idea came from the baseball operations department. They wanted fans in the stands, energy in the air, and a chance for the players to stay sharp before Red October officially kicks off. There’ll be walk-up music, player intros, and Phanavision running like it’s the real thing.
Every $10 ticket sold goes to Phillies Charities:
The Fightins will take the field in an intrasquad game on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
“The baseball operations team wanted to get together, wanted fans in the stands for the excitement, for the players, to stay sharp, and we’re going to be doing their names and Phanavision is going to be on,” John Weber, senior vice president of ticket operations of the Phillies, said.
So far, more than 27,000 tickets have been sold. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds benefit “Phillies Charities, Inc.”
Weber said tickets are still available, but the team will stop selling them at some point this week. He added that the number of tickets will be capped at around 31,000.
How many franchises could even dream of pulling this off? Selling out half a stadium for an intrasquad game?
Gotta say, Phillies fans are just wired different. This fanbase is so locked in and good on everyone involved by treating practice like it’s Game 7 of the World Series.
Honestly, it’s the perfect move. For fans who can’t get in the door once the playoff prices skyrocket (have you seen what NLDS tickets are going for already?), this is a last chance to see the squad in person before Red October takes over.
