Throwback: Jalen Hurts didn’t sound excited about Kevin Patullo becoming OC back in February

Let’s take a trip down memory lane. It’s February, the Eagles just won the Super Bowl, Jalen Hurts brought home Super Bowl MVP. All felt right in the world, which may be why we all overlooked this exchange between Hurts and a reporter.

Once the team arrived back in Philadelphia, Kellen Moore had already agreed to become the head coach in New Orleans. It was also pretty obvious that Kevin Patullo was first in line to take over as the OC.

When asked about it, Jalen Hurts didn’t exactly sound thrilled.

To be fair, Hurts never really sounds excited about anything. But you can tell he caught himself a little bit at the beginning when he said Patullo has never been an OC before. That’s pretty telling.

If anyone understand the tribulations of cycling through coordinators, it’s Jalen Hurts. He needs someone with experience who can help guide him in the right direction. Hurts is a student of the game and demands great coaching. It’s where he thrives the most. He doesn’t have all the answers and understands that, which is why we’ve seen him reach out to people outside of the organization for help when he’s not getting it in-house.

Two years ago, he reached out to then-Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. This year, it was Nick Saban.

It’s pretty obvious that there is no cohesion on the Eagles offense right now. Hurts shoulders some of the blame, but he can’t do everything. It shouldn’t be on him to create an effective game plan and then also go out and execute it. He’s getting no help from the coaching staff and I think everyone in that locker room realizes it.

It’s time for a change, before the season gets away from them.
