Smart: Teoscar Hernandez blames his wife being scared of ghosts as reason to not stay at Milwaukee’s haunted Pfister Hotel

A lot of baseball fans were confused about a Teoscar Hernandez tweet from Bob Nightengale today.

Trust me, the majority of times I have no clue what Nightengale is talking about either, but this time around, it actually made sense.

Teoscar Hernandez wanted to make it abundantly clear that he doesn’t believe in ghosts, but since his wife does, they have decided to switch hotels in downtown Milwaukee and stay somewhere else, rather than the legendary Pfister Hotel.

Teoscar Hernandez says wife made him switch hotels in Milwaukee

For the uninitiated, Milwaukee’s Pfister Hotel is a well-known haunted hotel downtown. Just last year, Mookie Betts opted to stay in an AirBnB rather than at the hotel with his teammates for that exact reason.

For the second consecutive year, Mookie Betts will stay in an AirBnb in Milwaukee instead of with the Dodgers at the haunted Pfister Hotel >>

Teoscar Hernandez blaming his wife for the move is certainly wild, but the real story is about the history of the hotel being haunted.

Ghosts of The Pfister Hotel

The Pfister Hotel was built in 1893 $1 million as a “Grand Hotel of the West”. It’s been the premier accommodation downtown in Milwaukee ever since. To this day, it continues to serve guests from all over the world and sticks to its tradition of providing gracious style and impeccable service to visitors.

During a period of decline in the late 50’s early 60’s, the hotel was purchased by Ben Marcus, who was determined to bring the hotel back to its former glory. Several years of renovations took place and some significant additions were made, including a new 23-story guest room tower.

The famed Pfister Hotel is one of the haunted locations in Wisconsin, and arguably one of the most haunted hotels in the country. It is a historical landmark in Milwaukee which is the home of professional baseball and basketball teams whenever they are in town.

[Haunted Rooms]

The Pfister Hotel has a long history of bizarre incidents, and the list involving Major League Baseball players continues to grow each season – most notably with Mookie Betts bailing on the stay the past two seasons.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel outlined a full list here. I posted cliff notes below.

2001: Adrián Beltré

Beltré claims there was knocking at his door while staying at the Pfister Hotel, even when he had the television and air conditioner turned off.

2008: Carlos Gómez

Everything’s scary. Everything in the hotel — the paintings and pictures, it’s a lot of old, crazy stuff. No good, man. No good.” – Carlos Gómez

2009: Brendan Ryan

“It was more like a moving light that kind of passed through the room,” the Cardinals infielder told a local TV station. “The room got a little bit chillier.” – Brendan Ryan

2009: Pablo Sandoval

“I went to take a shower, and I remember putting my iPod next to a speaker. When I came out, it was playing music, and I have no idea why.” Sandoval and teammate Edgar Renteria refused to stay with the rest of the team at the Pfister in 2010. – [ESPN]

2011: Michael Young

“A couple of years ago, I was lying in bed after a night game, and I was out. My room was locked, but I heard these footsteps inside my room, stomping around.” – Michael Young

2012: Bryce Harper

“I laid a pair of jeans and a shirt on that table at the foot of the bed. When I woke up in the morning — I swear on everything — the clothes were on the floor and the table was on the opposite side of the room.” – Bryce Harper (Nationals)

2013: Brandon Phillips

Phillips said he was in his room when the radio turned on. “So I turned it off, and got in the shower.” When he came back out, it was on again. [ESPN]

2013: C.J. Wilson

“I was on the computer one night, doing my typical shtick — surfing the web, sending an email, editing a photo — and then all of a sudden the lights started flickering,” Wilson said. “I’m thinking to myself, I’m going to be so pissed if my computer dies. Then the light just shuts off. And then the TV shuts off. And then the light turns back on, but the light at the front door turns off. I just yelled out, ‘Really?’ – C.J. Wilson

2016: Ji-Man Choi

Choi was playing first base for the Los Angeles Angels at the time when he reported feeling the presence of a spirit in his bed. [MLB]

2016: Pedro Álvarez

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he heard former Pirates infielder Pedro Álvarez had experienced weirdness at the hotel, which matches up with a story told in 2016 by Pirates manager Clint Hurdle. Hurdle didn’t name names but said one of his players became spooked when a TV in his room turned on twice in one night. [Call To The Pen]

2016: Jon Gray

Jon Gray, who is a part-time ghost hunter, got a chance to tackle the Pfister in 2016. [Cut4]

2018: Carlos Martinez and Marcell Ozuna

Carlos Martinez expressed that he had seen some sort of floating ghost on Instagram in June, and teammate Marcell Ozuna believed he had seen something similar, so the two elected to room together.

2023 & 2024: Mookie Betts:

Betts opted to stay at an AirBnB rather than the Pfister Hotel the previous two MLB seasons.

2025: Teoscar Hernandez

Teoscar Hernandez opted to place blame on his wife and switch hotels during the NLCS because of the past events at the Pfister Hotel.
