Trevor Zegras delivered the perfect explanation after ridiculous game-winning assist in Flyers’ home opener
The Flyers picked up their first win of the season Monday night in their home opener, knocking off the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers 5–2.
The highlight of the night came late in the third period when Trevor Zegras put together an absurd, no-look assist to set up the game-winner. Check this filth out. It’s the kind of play Flyers fans haven’t seen in years.
Trevor Zegras Game-Winning Assist
Trevor Zegras broke down the sequence like a guy who’s been there before:
“I tried to,” Zegras said when asked if he saw Sean Couturier cutting toward the net. “I settled it for a second and tried to read the play. Two guys came pretty hard and I just tried to get it off my stick as quick as possible. You kind of look up for a split second and see where your guys are. Obviously, if two people are coming at your head, someone is probably open. Little bit of area, little bit of feel for where the guys are, sure.”
Smooth, confident answer from a player who makes the impossible look casual. Not to take anything away from the Coots snipe, but you knew it was good when Tyson Foerster went over and celebrated with Zegras. The Panthers defense collapsed on Zegras, and he still managed to feather a perfect pass to Coots in stride.
The Flyers have faced one of the toughest opening schedules in hockey with the Panthers twice and Carolina in between. They now sit at 1–1–1 through three games.
Couturier looks sharp. Dan Vladar has been steady in net, tracking pucks through traffic and giving them a chance in every game. Now Zegras is on the board with his first signature moment in orange and black.
There’s a long way to go, but at this point, we’re all happy to just get a win in the city of Philadelphia. It’s been a rough few weeks but thanks to Trevor Zegras, we’re back on the good side.
