Bryce Harper named Gold Glove finalist, Turner and Stott somehow left off the list
The 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove finalists are out and once again, Bryce Harper finds himself in the mix as one of the top three defensive first basemen in baseball. Trea Turner and Bryson Stott in my humble opinion, got absolutely robbed.
For the second straight year, Bryce Harper will be up for a Gold Glove after another strong season at first base — a position he literally just picked up two summers ago because Rhys Hoskins got hurt and someone had to do it.
The guy went from Tommy John surgery to Gold Glove-level defense in about six months. That’s not normal.
Bryce Harper ranked in the 73rd percentile in Outs Above Average (OAA) this season, after finishing in the 93rd percentile last year. For someone who spent nearly a decade in the outfield, he’s made first base look natural.
There’s a legitimate argument that he’s already one of the top defenders at the position in baseball, which again is just insane given the circumstances.
Trea Turner and Bryson Stott…?
Trea Turner had one of the biggest defensive turnarounds in baseball this season. After posting a combined -9 OAA in his first two years in Philly, he flipped the switch and finished fourth among all shortstops (third in the NL) with +17 OAA. That’s elite-level defense, but for whatever reason, the guy doesn’t even get a finalist nod? Unreal.
Then there’s Bryson Stott, who ranked in the 94th percentile defensively and finished second among NL second basemen with +8 OAA.
Milwaukee’s Brice Turang somehow made the finalist list despite finishing below average at -2 OAA. Maybe it’s just me but that doesn’t make a lick sense.
Sure, the formula for finalists is supposed to be a blend of manager and coach voting (75%) and the SABR Defensive Index (25%), but maybe that 75% of coaches are idiots? I mean hell, I watched Rob Thomson fumble decision after decision for far too long to trust any manager’s opinion.
Anyways, if Bryce Harper ends up winning, he’d become only the second Phillies first baseman ever to take home a Gold Glove and the first since Bill White in 1966. The last Phillies player to win one at all was Zack Wheeler in 2023, so it’s not exactly an annual thing around here.
The winners will be announced Sunday, November 2nd on ESPN. Turner and Stott deserved better but at least we still have Bryce Harper, the guy that Philly Sports Talk radio actually wants to trade this offseason (lol) in the mix to bring home some hardware.
