Here are the Phillies prospects who are Rule 5 Draft eligible in 2025
The Phillies are once again entering that tricky offseason stretch where prospect protection becomes a math problem. The Rule 5 Draft always forces tough calls.
Protect too many, and you clog up the 40-man roster. Protect too few, and you risk losing a future contributor for nothing. The official list of eligible minor leaguers isn’t out yet, obviously, but based on age, draft year, and service time, we can already make some educated guesses.
Rule 5 Draft:
- Players drafted at 19+ become eligible after 4 seasons if not added to the 40-man.
- Players signed at 18 or younger get five seasons before exposure.
The Phillies have 11 prospects eligible for the Rule 5 Draft
- Andrew Painter
- Gabriel Rincones Jr.
- Griff McGarry
- Alex McFarlane
- Daniel Harper
- Christian McGowan
- Felix Reyes
- Robert Moore
- Saul Teran
- Caleb Ricketts
- Jordan Dissin
Phillies Easy Adds (Should Be Protected)
These guys are already ranked high on the prospects list. If they’re not on the 40-man roster by the deadline, someone else will take them.
- Andrew Painter – No brainer. Still the crown jewel of the farm system.
- Gabriel Rincones Jr. – Corner outfield pop. Won’t last 10 minutes in the Rule 5.
- Griff McGarry – Despite inconsistency, his stuff is too nasty to risk losing.
- Felix Reyes – Big raw power. Outfielder.
- Caleb Ricketts – Catching depth is scarce; he shouldn’t go unprotected.
Phillies Rule 5 Danger Zone
These are the types of players who could slip through the cracks.
- Alex McFarlane – Injuries, work in progress… we’ll see
- Daniel Harper – Intriguing relief arm squeezed out in a numbers game.
- Christian McGowan – Injuries, outside Phillies Top 30
- Jordan Dissin – Solid glove-first catcher not high enough in the system.
- Robert Moore – Scrappy infielder who hasn’t hit enough to force the issue yet.
- Saul Teran – Not polished enough to stick in MLB next season.
Roster Reality Check
That’s five potential adds from one class. Still might be too many. Last year, the Phillies only protected Mick Abel, Moises Chace, and Jean Cabrera, so expect a similar result in player cap this time around.
It’s a good problem to have. The Phillies’ farm system has quietly rebuilt itself into something resembling depth again. The only challenge now is making sure they don’t lose too much of it to a team willing to take a chance in December.
Expect Painter, Rincones Jr., McGarry, to get the call. I also like Caleb Ricketts for catcher depth but when you have Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs hanging around while the Phillies figure out what to do with free agent JT Realmuto, that might not be an option.
Yet again, that’s a numbers game.
It goes without saying that the Phillies need to re-sign JT Realmuto by any means necessary
Felix Reyes is my dark horse to be protected. Kid is a dawg and has been hitting all over the minor leagues. Get this guy on the 40-man.
The organization also remains high on Alex McFarlane so he could also be protected but a basic numbers test shows that right now, he might not be worth a spot. Everyone else will likely go unprotected and heading to the Rule 5 Draft.
