ESPN shamelessly runs betting ads while reporting on NBA gambling scandal, quietly removes ESPN Bet logo from bottom ticker

We might’ve screwed the pooch with this whole ESPN-fueled sports betting era.

By now, you’ve probably heard the FBI arrested more than 30 people tied to an illegal NBA betting ring. And as you also probably know, the NBA — along with every media outlet glued to their hip — makes millions every year from sportsbooks.

It’s a joke of a system, and nothing summed it up better than what The Worldwide Leader in Sports did during their morning coverage of this mess. While Mike Greenberg and the crew were talking about the arrests, ESPN was literally running ESPN Bet ads across the bottom ticker like nothing was wrong. Once they realized how embarrassing that looked, they quietly nuked the entire ticker from the broadcast.

I’m not even a big sports bettor, to be honest. Never really got into it. I don’t look down on people who do — if you want to throw a same-game parlay on a Tuesday night Hornets-Pacers game just to feel something, God bless. But at some point, something’s gotta give here.

This whole situation isn’t really about gambling itself. It’s an indictment on ESPN and the greasy way they’ve embedded betting into every inch of sports coverage. And honestly — is anyone even surprised?

ESPN went from “here’s the score” to “bet the over or you hate fun” in about five minutes. Now they’re acting shocked when the inevitable blowback starts hitting the league they’re in bed with.
