Nick Castellanos hires new agency as Phillies split looms
Nick Castellanos has officially hired Mato Sports Management as his new representation, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. It’s a quiet but telling move that could signal the final chapter of his time in Philadelphia.
Just last week, The Athletic reported that the Phillies are expected to either release or trade Castellanos this offseason. The writing’s been on the wall for months, but this feels like confirmation that both sides are ready to move on.
Nick Castellanos is expected to be traded or released by the Phillies this offseason
Dave Dombrowski didn’t say it outright during his season-ending press conference, but his silence said plenty. When asked about Castellanos, Dombrowski replied that he couldn’t comment on “specific players that are on our roster under contract,” then literally spent the next half hour doing exactly that, just not about Nick.
If Philly simply cuts Nick Castellanos, 33, they’ll be on the hook for the remaining $20 million in 2026. A trade would obviously be the better route, but given how public this stance has become, that might be easier said than done.
A Season to Forget
No way around it, Nick Castellanos’ 2025 season was rough. He hit .250 with a .694 OPS over 147 games, ranking 128th among qualified hitters. The power wasn’t there, the consistency wasn’t there, and by the end of the year, neither was the trust from the clubhouse or coaching staff.
Things really started to unravel in Miami when Castellanos had his now-infamous moment with Rob Thomson in the dugout, followed later by comments about the manager’s lack of communication. For a team that prides itself on chemistry and toughness, it didn’t sit well.
Castellanos has always been an emotional player, and Philly fans initially loved that edge. He brought the swagger and attitude. The big postseason home runs and clutch performances in October were enough for a while, but this year, it just never clicked.
New Representation, Same Uncertainty with Nick Castellanos
Castellanos was previously represented by Scott Boras through 2024 before deciding to represent himself for a year. That decision didn’t exactly pan out, and now he’s turning to Mato Sports Management, the same group that represents Cristopher Sánchez, who’s about to finish second in NL Cy Young voting.
Mato’s a smaller agency compared to Boras Corp, but one that’s built a reputation for close, player-first relationships. It makes sense for a veteran like Castellanos who’s trying to repair his image and figure out his next move… whether that’s a fresh start elsewhere or negotiating his release.
The End of the Line in Philly for Nick Castellanos
At this point, it’s hard to see a path for Casty back in red pinstripes. The Phillies have younger, cheaper outfield options and a front office clearly ready to turn the page after another season that ended short of expectations.
Castellanos was supposed to be part of the Phillies’ core when he signed that five-year, $100 million deal. Instead, it’s ending with uncertainty, agency changes, and trade rumors. If this is it for him in Philadelphia, it’s a disappointing finish but unfortunately, given the recency bias, it’s not a surprising one.
