Flyers Senators Recap

Flyers’ offense comes up short in 2-1 loss to Senators

The Flyers couldn’t turn early momentum into a third straight win Thursday night, falling 2-1 to the Ottawa Senators despite another strong outing from goaltender Dan Vladar.

Tyson Foerster opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the game with an absolute laser from the right circle. It was his third goal of the season but unfortunately, that was all the offense Philadelphia could muster.

Tyson Foerster puts the Flyers on the board early.

The Flyers’ power play, which looked lively earlier this week, went 0-for-3, and Ottawa capitalized on a few key defensive lapses to take control.

Claude Giroux and Olle Lycksell, two familiar faces, did the damage. Giroux set up Michael Amadio for the equalizer midway through the first, and Lycksell, the one who couldn’t crack the Flyers’ roster, buried what would stand as the game-winner early in the second.

Dan Vladar Keeps Delivering

It’s getting hard to ask for much more from Dan Vladar. The 28-year-old netminder stopped 31 of 33 shots, marking his fifth straight start allowing two goals or fewer.

His goals-against average sits at 1.75 with a .929 save percentage, and it’s clear that Rick Tocchet trusts him as the team’s backbone right now.

The Flyers’ defensive structure in front of him has improved dramatically. They’ve allowed just 18 goals in seven games, a far cry from the 31 they gave up through the same stretch last season.

Tocchet’s emphasis on puck possession and controlled defensive zone play is paying off. The problem continues to be the Flyers offense, which hasn’t kept pace. They are averaging just 2.7 goals per game, and the power play continues to sputter at 3-for-22 on the year.

Tyson Foerster Still Cooking

If there’s a bright spot, it’s Tyson Foerster. The 23-year-old winger continues to look like a breakout candidate, with 12 goals and five assists in his last 16 games dating back to last season.

He’s starting to look like the complete player the Flyers always hoped he’d become, with a heavy shot, good instincts, and smart two-way play. As Travis Konecny said earlier this year, “Someday people are going to be worried about him on the ice.” That day might be getting close.

Flyers-Senators Game Notes:

  • Matvei Michkov had four shots and nearly scored on a breakaway after leaving the penalty box in the first period. He’s sitting at one goal and one assist through seven games.
  • Rodrigo Abols drew into the lineup for Jett Luchanko, who remains stuck on four games and could soon be headed back to Guelph.
  • Linus Ullmark stopped 22 of 23 shots for Ottawa, who were missing captain Brady Tkachuk due to a thumb injury.

The Flyers fall to 3-3-1 on the season and 0-2-1 on the road, but they’ll get a chance to regroup quickly. They return home Saturday afternoon to open a five-game homestand against the New York Islanders at 12:30 p.m.
