Flyers begin homestand with shootout win over Islanders

The Flyers kicked off their five-game homestand with a much-needed win Saturday afternoon, beating the New York Islanders 4-3 in a shootout at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Trevor Zegras finally had his breakout game in orange and black, scoring twice and adding an assist, while Christian Dvorak chipped in with a goal and an assist of his own.

The Flyers trailed 2-0 early and 3-2 late, but Zegras and Matvei Michkov buried their shootout attempts to seal the comeback victory.

Philly is now 4-3-1 overall and an impressive 4-1 at home. The Islanders saw their four-game win streak snapped, falling to the Flyers for the first time this season.

Trevor Zegras…

This was the version of Trevor Zegras that fans have been waiting for. He scored twice, including his first as a Flyer, added an assist, and showed flashes of the star power that made him one of the NHL’s most exciting young players. Zegras now has eight points (two goals, six assists) in his first eight games with Philadelphia.

Ersson Steps Up Between the Pipes

After more than a week off, Samuel Ersson made the most of his return, stopping 23 of 26 shots and two of three attempts in the shootout. He also made one of the saves of the season in overtime with a full-extension glove stop after a Flyers turnover that drew a standing ovation from the crowd.

Dan Vladar had started the last three games and been lights out, but Ersson reminded everyone why he’s such a steady presence in the crease.

Michkov’s Rollercoaster Night

It wasn’t a flawless game for Matvei Michkov, but it was an eventful one. A risky pass on the power play led to a shorthanded Islanders goal early on but to his credit, Michkov bounced back in the second period with a slick cross-ice feed to Zegras that set up Dvorak’s goal.

Flyers Finding an Identity

They didn’t dominate possession, but made their shots count, putting 26 on Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin, who stopped 23. Philly’s power play remains inconsistent, but there’s no denying the team is finding a rhythm at home.

Zegras’ shootout winner gave the Flyers their fourth home win in five tries, and they’ll look to build on that momentum Tuesday night when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins.
