Flyers outlast Penguins in shootout thriller, 3-2
Say what you want about the Flyers, but they are definitely making a habit of keeping things dramatic.
For the sixth time in nine games, Philly played a one-goal contest, and for the fourth time this season, it went to overtime. This time around, it ended in a shootout win in the Battle of Pennsylvania against the always-hated Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Bobby Brink and Matvei Michkov were the heroes in the shootout, while Samuel Ersson stood tall in net, stopping 24 of 26 shots and two of three shootout attempts to secure the Flyers’ fifth win of the season. The team is now 5-1-0 at home and 5-3-1 overall.
Bobby Brink and Travis Konecny Lead the Way
Bobby Brink had himself a night, recording a goal, an assist, and the game-winner in the shootout. His power-play goal late in the first period tied the game 1-1, and his silky double-deke in the shootout sealed it.
TK 200
Travis Konecny continued his hot start to the season, scoring his 200th career goal early in the second period to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. It was a milestone moment for the Flyers’ alternate captain, who became the 17th player in franchise history to reach the 200-goal mark.
Classic Pens-Flyers in OT
The game could have ended twice in overtime, but both teams saw potential winners wiped off the board.
First, Evgeni Malkin appeared to score on a delayed penalty for Pittsburgh, but officials ruled an illegal substitution since Malkin stepped on the ice before goalie Arturs Silovs reached the bench.
Minutes later, Tyson Foerster buried a power-play goal for the Flyers that would have sent the building into chaos, only for the league’s Situation Room to overturn it for offside.
Both benches emptied after the horn with a bit of post-overtime chaos. Eight players were given game misconducts, including Sidney Crosby, who scored earlier in the game but was ineligible for the shootout as a result.
Side Note: Of course ESPN still can’t figure it out and had the entire thing on split-screen as the Caps-Stars game got underway.
Sidney Crosby (Rat)
Sid tied the game 2-2 midway through the third when his backhand pass from behind the net deflected off Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler’s shoulder and into the goal.
Ersson and the Special Teams Shine
Toch rode with Samuel Ersson for the second straight game, and the 26-year-old rewarded the faith with another clutch performance.
The Flyers went 1-for-4 on the power play and were perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, including a huge kill in overtime that led to their own power-play chance.

What’s Next
The Flyers will continue their five-game homestand Thursday night when they welcome the Nashville Predators to Xfinity Mobile Arena.
The Flyers are learning how to win the tough ones. They’ve played in six one-goal games already and continue to thrive under pressure. At this rate, the Flyers might give everyone in Philadelphia a heart attack by Christmas but at the very least, they’ll be doing it while racking up points.
