Cooper Flagg’s mom stirs up controversy with social media post over the “Fire Nico” chants during Mavericks game

Well, here’s one I didn’t have on my bingo card. Cooper Flagg’s mom is now part of the Dallas Mavericks drama.

In case you somehow missed it, the Mavs finally fired general manager Nico Harrison. He’s the moron who orchestrated one of the most baffling trades in NBA history, shipping Luka Dončić to the Lakers for an aging Anthony Davis.

It was the kind of move that instantly turned Dallas into a league-wide punchline and had fans in full revolt from day one.

Fast forward a few months, and the basketball gods (or maybe the NBA deep state) rewarded the Mavs with the No. 1 overall pick. That pick was used to select Cooper Flagg, the next big thing in basketball.

Unfortunately for him, he’s been playing in front of one of the most hostile fanbases imaginable, with “Fire Nico” chants echoing through the arena on a nightly basis.

So when Harrison was finally shown the door, you’d think the drama might die down. Nope. Instead, Cooper Flagg’s mom, Kelly, decided to make her voice heard on social media.

Cooper Flagg should not have to listen to “Fire Nico” chants when a teammate of his is at the free throw line with the game on the line. Nico Harrison will be a huge distraction and a stain on this franchise until he is fired. Get rid of him as soon as possible so we can all move…

She retweeted a post about the firing, and naturally, the internet did what the internet does… exploded. Mavs fans, NBA Twitter, and every talking head with a pulse jumped in to dissect it.

Kelly later clarified her intentions, writing:

“Retweet wasn’t about firing Nico. It was about the fact that the fans were chanting during our free throws. Our guys had nothing to do with what went down. It’s done now so we all need to move on. Hopefully better days ahead.”

Honestly, she’s right. It’s not that deep but you know how fanbases get when they smell blood. Literally every tweet becomes a headline.

Still, it’s hard not to feel for Cooper in all this. The kid didn’t ask for this mess. He just happened to be drafted into a franchise still emotionally recovering from losing Luka Dončić, and now he’s trying to carry that same fanbase while they booed their front office into oblivion.

Kelly Flagg is just doing what moms do in defending her son and his teammates. Anyone who’s ever had a basketball mom in the stands knows exactly what that’s like. She’s not stirring controversy, she’s standing up for her kid.

Again, she honestly has a point. The Mavs finally made the right move by cutting ties with Nico Harrison, and now maybe they can start fresh with Cooper Flagg as the centerpiece of the rebuild.

Will the sting of the Luka trade ever fully go away? Probably not. If there’s a silver lining for Dallas, it’s that they somehow ended up with a generational prospect in Flagg. It might take time, but this could be the start of something new.

Now let’s just hope the fans can stop chanting long enough to let the kid play.
