Dombrowski rightfully clears the air with Bryce Harper over a situation that never needed to happen
In case you missed it, Dave Dombrowski and Bryce Harper have officially talked things out.
Last month, Dombrowski made headlines when he evaluated Bryce Harper’s 2025 season by saying he “didn’t have an elite season” and questioned whether he could reach that level again.
That set off a firestorm of speculation… obviously.
Trade rumors surfaced out of thin air. Morons in New York thought that we were going to trade Bryce Harper to the Yankees for a prospect, Phillies fans wondered if the comments came from friction over a potential contract extension and Bryce Harper himself even admitted he was bothered by the remarks.
Bryce Harper is “pissed off” thanks to Dave Dombrowski’s comments questioning his “elite” status
All completely avoidable.
Dombrowski can be blunt. That is part of why teams hire him. There’s also blunt, and then there is unnecessary. Critiquing the most important player in the organization publicly after the season ends in disappointing fashion falls firmly in the latter category.
The Two Sides Move Forward
To their credit, both sides handled the aftermath professionally. Harper and Dombrowski spoke.
“We had a nice conversation,” Dombrowski told reporters at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas. “Everything went well.”
Feelings were addressed. The relationship is fine now. That is great, but again, this entire situation was easily preventable and completely unnecessary from the jump.
There was absolutely no reason for the president of baseball operations to publicly call out the Phillies’ franchise cornerstone. Harper has a full no trade clause. He wants to remain in Philadelphia until he dies.
He is the face of the franchise, the heartbeat of the clubhouse, and the foundation of the Phillies’ brand. Dombrowski should know better than to light a match anywhere near that. I guess now we can focus on things that actually matter, right?
The Phillies need another big bat. They need clarity at catcher and DH. They need an outfielder. They need to figure out free agency for Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, and Ranger Suárez. They need to retool the bullpen.
Bryce Harper has even said he would return to the outfield if the team adds a significant first baseman. Dombrowski shut that down for now, saying Harper is viewed as a long-term first baseman. He praised Harper’s growth at the position.
Either way, this was all annoyingly unnecessary
None of this needed to become a storyline. Bryce Harper is locked in. He is committed. He is a generational player who wants to retire in Philadelphia. Calling him out in the media did nothing for the Phillies except create noise.
It is good that both sides cleared the air. It is also good that the front office is shifting back toward the actual work of the offseason.
Dombrowski should have known better. There was never a reason for this fire to start. The Phillies have enough to worry about this winter without creating problems out of thin air.
