Bob Nightengale Zac Gallen Chicago Cubs

Bob Nightengale’s latest ‘report’ on Zac Gallen might be his greatest work yet

What happened with Bob Nightengale on Twitter today was not simply a reporter making a mistake. It was performance art from the most unpredictable newsman in baseball history.

Bob Nightengale once again reminded the world that he does not operate on mortal timelines or journalistic customs. He operates on vibes, whispers, and whatever cosmic energy compels him to mash the tweet button before basic confirmation.

His Zac Gallen to the Cubs misfire might be the crown jewel of his legacy.

Bob Nightengale is a true master of deception

Some believe he does it for entertainment. Others insist GM’s deliberately sabotage him. No one really knows. What we do know is that Bob Nightengale has spent years bamboozling the baseball world with a level of confidence that borders on spiritual enlightenment.

Just after noon, Bob fired off a bomb that Zac Gallen was heading to the Cubs. Winter Meetings officially ignited. Chicago had their new ace. The baseball world spun.

Minutes later, Bob quietly edited the tweet to clarify that the Cubs are hopeful Gallen will sign. Hopeful. The same level of hope I have that my hairline miraculously returns in 2026.

Then Jeff Passan showed up, broom in hand, sweeping up the mess and confirming that nothing was imminent.

Jeff Passan quickly corrects the report…lol

This is the same man who reported Kyler Murray was heading to A’s spring training minutes after Kyler publicly declared for the NFL Draft.

The same man who gave us Javy Baez for Shelby Miller, reported Bryce Harper’s death, and announced that Trevor Bauer to the Mets was finished before being immediately proven wrong. For Bob, this is simply day-to-day life.

Don’t get it twisted, every now and then Bob Nightengale nails something big. When Jon Morosi convinced the entire world that Shohei Ohtani was flying to Toronto to sign with the Blue Jays, Bob stood firm and revealed Shohei was nowhere near Canada.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day, and Bob Nightengale is no ordinary clock.

This is why the world cherishes Bob. There is nobody else like him. Other reporters must look at him the way the internet looked at Mintzy. There is no filter. No hesitation. No internal voice saying “maybe wait.” If Bob hears something, thinks something, or dreams something, it becomes a tweet. Accuracy is optional. Consequences do not apply.

And through all of it, he carries nearly half a million followers and a secure job with USA Today. He is a marvel. A gift to baseball. An agent of chaos who makes every offseason infinitely more entertaining.

Now that he has discovered the edit tool, we have officially reached the final form of the Nightengale Era. He can now tweet something catastrophically wrong and simply patch it like a buggy video game.

Buckle up. Bob Nightengale is only getting stronger.
