WATCH: Zach Ertz carted off after brutal low hit from Vikings DB Jay Ward
Zach Ertz left the field on a cart Sunday after taking one of the ugliest low hits you will see all season, courtesy of Vikings defensive back Jay Ward. Ertz was fully extended in the air going for the ball when Ward dove straight at his knee, collapsing him instantly and leaving the Commanders tight end in obvious pain.
Note: The NFL did not consider this a hit on a defenseless player.

Tell me how that makes sense. The entire purpose of the “defenseless receiver” rule is to protect players exactly like Ertz in exactly this situation. He’s airborne, arms up, no ability to brace himself or shift his weight, and Ward goes low at full speed.
If that’s not defenseless, then the rule is nothing more than a suggestion.
To be clear, I’m not calling Jay Ward dirty. This was a bang-bang football play and he reacted like defensive backs react.
None of that even matters because the outcome is the problem. Zach Ertz had no way to protect himself and paid the price for it.
The league insists it cares about player safety, yet hits like this continue to slip through the cracks because they don’t fit neatly into a rulebook category.
The injury to Zach Ertz just made Washington’s day even worse. Jayden Daniels, who was cleared to play this week despite not looking entirely right, got rocked and exited early. He never looked confident, never looked comfortable, and now the team is 3-9 and down 24-0 to a four-win Vikings team.
At this point, shutting him down feels like the only responsible move.
The Commanders need to be smart. A lost season is a lost season. Protect your quarterback. Protect your veterans. Protect anyone with long-term value.
Unfortunately, for Zach Ertz, that advice comes too late. A brutal low hit that should fall under the league’s own definition of illegal contact now leaves him staring at another significant injury and probably, the end of his legendary NFL career.
How the NFL can watch that play and say Zach Ertz was not defenseless is beyond me.
