DeVonta Smith backs Jalen Hurts: “We’re In A Good Spot”

While the outside noise continues to reach absurd levels, DeVonta Smith isn’t buying into the panic surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite dropping three straight games, Smith made it clear on Friday that the locker room isn’t spiraling. Far from it.

“I feel like we’re alright. We’re in a good spot,” Smith told reporters, and honestly, he’s right. The Eagles sit at 8-5, still leading the NFC East, with four games left on the schedule. Dallas is lurking at 6-6-1, but Philly still controls its own destiny. That reality seems lost on a lot of people yelling into microphones and timelines this week.

DeVonta Smith also pushed back on the idea that the Eagles are completely imploding offensively. When asked if there were positives to take from the losing streak, his answer was simple.

“We’re not shooting ourselves in the foot. We operate pretty well.”

That might sound tame, but it matters. The Eagles are not getting blown out. They are not disorganized. They are not quitting. They are losing tight games while dealing with injuries, inconsistency up front, and a quarterback who had one brutal night at the worst possible time. Smith pointed specifically to the offense’s tempo in Monday night’s overtime loss to the Chargers.

“I feel like we operated faster, got in and out of the huddle pretty good,” he said.

That tracks with the tape. The offense looked more urgent. More decisive. It just didn’t finish. DeVonta Smith finished that game with four catches on eight targets. Not a huge stat line, but his night, like the rest of the offense, was overshadowed by Jalen Hurts’ career-high five turnovers.

Raiders at Eagles: Key things that actually matter on Sunday

That performance lit the fuse for one of the dumbest weeks of Eagles discourse in recent memory, including actual conversations about benching Hurts. Nick Sirianni shut that down immediately, calling the idea “ridiculous.”

DeVonta Smith backs Jalen Hurts…

DeVonta Smith echoed that sentiment without hesitation.

“You don’t just sit there and beat yourself up over things like that,” Smith said. “In this game, stuff like that happens. Everybody’s gonna have a game where they’re down. You tell me somebody that you know that don’t have games like that.”

That’s the key point everyone keeps ignoring. Every quarterback has bad games. Every team hits turbulence. What matters is how they respond. Smith said Hurts has been the same guy this week. Same demeanor. Same leader. No cracks.

The Eagles now get a home game against a 2-11 Raiders team with a backup quarterback. A bounce-back spot if there’s ever been one. If Philly handles business and the Cowboys stumble later Sunday night against Minnesota, the division picture looks a whole lot calmer.

The sky isn’t falling. The season isn’t over. And the people actually inside the building seem to understand that better than anyone yelling from the outside.
