Dave Dombrowski Phillies Outfield

Dave Dombrowski says the Phillies outfield is ‘pretty much set’ and I’m going to end up on the news

I’m sorry, Dave Dombrowski, but please tell me this is another butchered Bob Nightengale tweet that completely missed the mark.

If you actually believe the Phillies’ outfield is truly “pretty much set” after the Adolis García signing, then we have officially entered delusion territory.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with this update from Dave Dombrowski

Let’s actually look at what “pretty much set” means in reality.

Right now, the Phillies’ outfield situation looks like this:

  • CF: Justin Crawford – a rookie who hasn’t played a major league inning
  • RF: Adolis García – fine, but absolutely not a needle-mover
  • RF: Nick Castellanos – a guy the organization is begging to trade
  • LF: Brandon Marsh – wildly inconsistent and still not an everyday player
  • INF/OF: Weston Wilson – replacement-level depth
  • INF/OF: Otto Kemp – my guy, but more infielder than long-term left fielder

Hey Dave Dombrowski, in what universe is this “pretty much set”?

Adolis García is a useful signing. He’s better defensively than Castellanos, brings some power, and adds depth. Let’s stop pretending this was some splash move. This is exactly why I didn’t overreact when the signing happened. García is a complementary piece, not a solution. He does not suddenly turn a flawed outfield into a strength.

Justin Crawford is a rookie. Nick Castellanos is practically begging to be traded and may end up released with the Phillies eating the money. Brandon Marsh continues to prove he can’t handle everyday duties. Weston Wilson isn’t a consistent MLB bat. Otto Kemp is versatile and likable, but not someone you pencil in as a starting left fielder on a contender.

So again, I ask Dave Dombrowski: How is this “pretty much set”?

If this is Dave Dombrowski speaking honestly, then it’s alarming. If this is smoke and mirrors, then fine, but Phillies fans have every right to be frustrated by the messaging because nothing about this outfield screams “finished product.”

NPB Update: Phillies still very much in the mix for Tatsuya Imai and the clues keep adding up

If the Phillies are actually serious about upgrading, the paths are obvious. Harrison Bader makes sense. Kazuma Okamoto makes even more sense, especially given his experience at first base, third base, and left field in Japan. If neither of those options materialize, are we really saying that the next option is giving Gabriel Rincones Jr. a look?

What a disaster… lol.

To make matters worse, this entire offseason feels like it’s being held hostage by J.T. Realmuto. The Phillies reportedly offered him a two-year deal, which he’s sitting on while he shops for a three-year contract.

JT Realmuto has the entire organization feeling like everything else is officially paused while we await his decision. On top of that, if Realmuto walks, Dave Dombrowski suddenly has a massive hole behind the plate too, and no, Rafael Marchán or Garrett Stubbs cannot be the answer.

So yeah, this update stinks.

Let’s hope “pretty much set” is just front-office lip service and not the actual plan. If this is truly the Phillies’ final outfield heading into the season, then this roster is nowhere near good enough to get where it needs to go.

Pray this is all bullshit and that real movement is coming, starting with Realmuto, before the week is over.
