Flyers head into Holiday Break with back-to-back wins, chasing first place in the Metro
The Flyers didn’t just limp into the holiday break. They kicked the door in, grabbed two points, and reminded the rest of the Metropolitan Division that this season is very real.
A 3–1 win over the Blackhawks on Tuesday night pushed the boys to 19-10-7 and into second place in the Metro, just two points behind Carolina.
Let that sink in for a second.
Two points off first place at Christmas. Last year at this time, this team was underwater and searching for answers. This year, they’re one of the most consistent teams in the Eastern Conference.
Flyers win back-to-back games heading into holiday break
Flyers have now picked up at least a point in 19 of its last 24 games.
That’s a team that knows how to play, knows how to grind, and knows how to close.
Travis Konecny set the tone early, opening the scoring and adding an assist for a multi-point night. Noah Cates buried a power-play goal off a gorgeous feed from Konecny, which also happened to be assist number 300 of his career.
Carl Grundstrom iced it with an empty-netter, because this team actually finishes games now instead of hanging on for dear life.
Sean Couturier quietly picked up two assists, and Samuel Ersson delivered arguably his best start of the season. After a rough stretch coming in, Ersson was steady, calm, and exactly what the Flyers needed, stopping 20 of 21 shots and slamming the door late.
They did all of this on the second night of a back-to-back, on the road, against a desperate Chicago team, while losing bodies along the way.
Travis Sanheim went down after an interference hit and didn’t return, though he left under his own power. Denver Barkey also didn’t see the ice in the third period after getting jumped following a boarding call. It wasn’t pretty, but it was another example of this team not folding when things get uncomfortable.
The numbers tell the story.
Philly heads into the break with the second-best points percentage in the Eastern Conference and are staring directly at first place in the division. Trevor Zegras continues to look like a steal, extending his point streak to nine games and already surpassing last season’s production in significantly fewer games.
The break comes at a good time, especially for a team that’s leaned heavily on guys like Sanheim, but make no mistake about it. When the Flyers return Sunday night in Seattle, they’re not just playing out the schedule.
They’re hunting first place. Enjoy the holidays. Merry Christmas.
